The following examples illustrate experiential learning opportunities within your faculty. Availability may differ annually and is not guaranteed for every course. The Experiential Education team continues to work with Brock faculty to preserve this way of learning, where it is the best decision for our learners, our faculty and our community partners to do so.

Goodman School of Business

Experiential Education at the Goodman School of Business is a fundamental part of the undergraduate and graduate learning experience. Throughout your degree, you will have opportunities to participate in realistic business simulations and bridge theory to practice through consulting service-learning projects. Specific opportunities for experiential learning will vary by department, course, and instructor each year.

  • Students worked with a local not-for-profit organization to develop recommendations on improving their strategic position and make them better equipped for the complex social dynamics of the community.
  • A 2nd year Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources course worked with a local business who grew from one to fifty employees in 3 years, supporting the development of a brand new HR onboarding and support manual for the company.
  • A MBA course worked with Sport Niagara to develop robust strategies to attract world-class sporting events and talent to the Niagara Region, fueling continued investments in our tourism sector.
  • A 4th year marketing course developed and implemented consumer behaviour studies for local wine industry partners to help them grow their sales and increase their brand value.
  • A MACC course engaged with a local not-for-profit to assist their finance staff in the development of process automations and improvements to dramatically reduce staff reporting times.
  • A 4th year independent study paired up a student with a local entrepreneur developing an AI B2B financing tool, where they were able to apply theories to cutting edge AI technology development to support their app development.

Faculty of Education

Experiential Education in the Faculty of Education bridges educational theory and practice, allowing future teachers, early childhood educators, and educational leaders to deepen their understanding of their careers; clarify personal/professional goals and values; develop in-demand professional communication and networking skills; contribute to local and global education; and participate in collaborations with industry and community partners.

The Experiential Education office supports Years 1 to 4 of your undergraduate degree. While specific opportunities in students’ experiential education may vary by department, course, and instructor

  • Observing in Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) classrooms across Ontario, Canada to compare and contrast how real-world classrooms apply textbook theory and practice professional ethics and standards (Ontario College of Teachers [OCT]).
  • Supporting educational program delivery in your community (e.g., day cares, outdoor education programs, resource development centers, math and literacy programs, retirement homes, public health sector, children’s museums, local butterfly observatory, non-profits agencies, etc.)
  • Applying the theory of reading and literacy development to real-world practice by providing individualized tutoring support to K-12 students through interactive activities and technology.
  • Learning how to support language learners in partnership with a local school board by working one-on-one with English language learner (ELL) students, with the guidance of a licensed Multi-Language Resource Coach (MRC).
  • Partaking in alternative “out-of-the-box” experiences beyond traditional day-care centers (e.g., zoos/aquariums, forest schools, museums, pre-natal hospital ward, international field experiences, student research, etc.) to develop a comprehensive and informed understanding of early childhood education.
  • Researching educational practice or theory alongside a faculty member, such as how to support blind and visually impaired children in nature (e.g., forest schools).

Faculty of Humanities

Experiential education in the Faculty of Humanities varies by department, course, instructor, and discipline, and showcases the entire scope of Experiential Education at Brock. We are proud to support robust and multifaceted opportunities for students to engage with community partners, experts and professionals from many career sectors, and to learn by doing through classroom-based activities, projects, simulations, and engagements, as well as community-engaged internships, field work, performance and other experiential practices. The Faculty of Humanities’ Experiential Education opportunities provide creative, technical, and critical skills development for students of all disciplines.

Faculty of Social Science

As a student in Brock’s Faculty of Social Sciences, experiential learning opportunities will allow you to apply your classroom learning to real-world settings. Collaborate with others, develop transferable skills, clarify career goals, and contribute to local and global communities.

Specific opportunities for experiential learning vary by department, course, and instructor and may change from year to year based on community and research needs.

Experiential Education in the Faculty of Mathematics & Science offers hands-on, real-world learning through curriculum-integrated projects, labs, fieldwork and collaborations with in-demand industry and community partners. These transformative experiences deepen understanding, develop technical, analytical and professional communication skills while also connecting classroom theory with practical applications in research, health, technology and environment.
