Canada Games provides Brock University with a unique opportunity to engage with our local and national community as we prepare to host the Summer Games in 2022. The Community Engagement Sub Committee is composed of staff from across the University who serve to recruit, train and support student volunteers as they become involved with the Games. over the next two years. Through the creation of the Brock University Volunteer Association (BUVA), the committee worked alongside the Canada Host Society to identify volunteer needs and to meet those needs through training and preparation of a cohort of student volunteers.  

Since its inception in 2019, the Brock University Volunteer Association (BUVA) has engaged over 100 Brock students in all areas of study and all years of study, including undergraduate and graduate students.  BUVA members have engaged in 17 training sessions for a total of 417 hours of student training.  Student members have participated in 876 volunteer hours with 61 different organizations in the Niagara Region and beyond. 

In a satisfaction survey of BUVA members, 100% of the student respondents said they would recommend BUVA to a friend or classmate and 94% of students surveyed said they have increased how often they volunteer because of BUVA. 

The Brock University Volunteer Association will be a legacy project from the Canada Games as we start to recruit a new cohort of students in the Fall of 2022. Moving forward, BUVA will continue to provide opportunities for Brock volunteers to connect with other community-minded students and the community at large.
