Attracting and retaining top-notch faculty
Brock is emerging as one of Canada’s leading mid-sized universities, but not just because of our ability to attract prospective students. Brock is home to 13 Canada Research Chairs. Nine of Brock’s faculty members have received the 3M Teaching Fellowship Award, the only national award recognizing teaching excellence. And more than 90 per cent of our faculty members have a PhD or a comparable professional designation, the second highest among similar sized Ontario universities.
Developing both sides of the brain through research discovery
Our professors are actively engaged at the forefront of their respective fields. Brock students learn directly from their teachers and mentors through lectures that challenge, discussions that inspire, texts that encourage new ways of thinking and research that stretches academic boundaries.
Expanding our faculty and equipping professors to do what they do best — to develop both sides of the brain in our students through research discovery — are top priorities of our campaign.
Endowed chairs lead to economic growth
With our transition from a primarily undergraduate teaching university to a more comprehensive, research intensive and graduate training institution, one of the objectives of Brock’s 2014 Academic Plan is to raise the profile of research.
Based on the success of the Canada Research Chair Program in leading discovery, recruiting the best students and attracting a team of faculty who are distinguished teachers, scholars, researchers and scientists, Brock 2014 is seeking to invest through philanthropy six endowed research chairs, one in each academic Faculty:
- Applied Health Sciences
- Mathematics and Science
- Social Sciences
A nexus to faculty and students, endowed chairs are leaders in their field with a special mandate to teach and research in areas of excellence. By challenging the norm and pushing theories in opposing directions, endowed chairs will attract and retain some of the world's most accomplished and promising minds, including outstanding researchers, post doctoral fellows and energetic and intelligent graduate students from around the world, whose research ideas transform into applications that can be used to create new small to medium enterprises and knowledge economy jobs.
Funded in perpetuity, endowed chairs will improve our depth of knowledge and quality of life and will help train the next generation of highly skilled people through student supervision, teaching, and coordination with other researchers' work. They will strengthen Canada's international competitiveness, highlight Brock as a centre of innovation and research excellence and bolster our research capacity to help transform the economic, cultural and social fabric of Niagara and beyond.
Investing in teaching and learning
Thanks to the impact of our Centre for Teaching, Learning and Educational Technologies, and the passion of our faculty members to ensure an engaging learning experience, Brock students dramatically increase their rankings of the Brock academic experience as they progress through university.
The Brock 2014 Academic Plan calls for further investments into practical, hands-on workshops designed to properly orient teachers to Brock’s Learning Management Systems. In addition to other teaching resources, these enhanced workshops will ensure that students are provided with an enriched, educational experience of the highest quality. Investing in teaching and learning programs will engage students both inside and outside the classroom, encourage life-long learning and inspire our students to become contributing members of society and leaders in their chosen fields.
