Cognitive neuropsychology

  • amnesia, traumatic brain injury in children and adults, Alzheimer’s disease
  • attention, encoding and retrieval mechanisms (implicit learning and memory)
  • executive function, social and emotional interpretation associated with frontal lobe function
  • cognitive strategies for individuals with acquired brain injury in social, community and educational settings

Physiological

  • physiological basis of memory and cognition
  • functional role of prefrontal structures and their influence on subcortical structures and behaviour

My research interests focus on understanding the processing constraints involved in cognition, reasoning, and memory ability and how it impacts community living and daily function and how these abilities may be preserved, compensated, and/or mimicked in neurologically compromised individuals.

With the goal of improving currently inadequate indices of cognitive reasoning and executive function, especially with respect to how it influences applied, practical and functional abilities (e.g. predictors for driving safety, social competency and development of relationships, ability to live independently and successfully in the community, discriminating neuropsychological signals for psychosocial versus neurologic/organic bases for behavioural dyscontrol, research focuses on identifying predictors and neuropsychological correlates of every day functional skills and demands.

In addition, my research is focused on understanding the current education base of professionals who work with individuals who have neurological compromise in practical settings – educational system, rehabilitation settings, community integration, and then identifying strategies and the means of applying these techniques to improve the ability for professionals to more successfully address the needs and required services of persons with neurological challenges.
