While your student will take the lead in navigating their experience, you remain an important part of their support system. This page is designed to help you understand what to expect, how Brock supports your student, and how you can stay connected from wherever you are in the world.
Supporting your student’s journey
In Canada, university students are expected to take responsibility for their academic and personal decisions. This includes communicating directly with the university about their courses, grades, and personal matters.
Due to privacy legislation (FIPPA), Brock is not able to share personal or academic information with family members without your student’s explicit consent.
What this means for you:
- Your student will be your primary source of information
- Encouraging open communication with your student is key
- You can support them by helping them build confidence and independence
We support students before they arrive in Canada to ensure a smooth transition. Before your student travels:
- Ensure study permits and travel documents are in place
- Review housing arrangements (on-campus or off-campus)
- Understand health insurance coverage
- Attend pre-arrival webinars, International Student Virtual Orientation and review New International Student Welcome Guide
Encourage your student to read their emails thoroughly and connect with Brock International for any questions prior to arrival.
Housing and Community
Students may live in residence or off-campus housing. Both options include access to support networks and opportunities to build community.
Cost of Living and Finances
Families often play a role in financial planning. Key considerations include:
- Tuition and ancillary fees
- Housing and food costs
- Transportation and personal expenses
Brock provides resources to help students manage their finances and understand payment options.
Immigration processes can be complex, and your student is responsible for maintaining their legal status in Canada. However, families often play a key supporting role. You may help by providing financial documentation for study permit applications or extensions. If issues arise:
- Encourage your student to connect directly with Brock International’s licensed professionals
- Avoid relying on unofficial advice or third-party agents
- Understand that immigration guidance must be provided directly to the student
If you are planning to visit or accompany your student to Canada (for example, during convocation), you may need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), depending on your country of citizenship. Ask your student to visit Inviting Family to Canada for information on how to support your application to come to Canada.
