Meet the 2025-26 International Student Ambassadors

International Student Ambassadors are here to support you throughout your journey at Brock. There’s nothing like talking to someone who has been through a similar journey to yours. From different backgrounds, programs and years of study, they can support you with topics like study tips; navigating campus supports and services; learning about clubs and volunteer opportunities on campus; and adjusting to life at Brock, in Niagara and in Canada.

Introducing this year’s ambassadors, ready to serve Brock’s international student community.

Louis

VIETNAM

Second year MBA (Accounting specialization) student Louis Tieu is our graduate student ambassador who chose Brock because he was drawn to the reputation of Canadians as welcoming and friendly individuals and for the climate. Louis wanted to become an International Student Ambassador because of his personal experience as an international student and a deep commitment to supporting others navigating a similar journey.

My time at Brock has been filled with many enriching moments, but what stands out most vividly is the profound impact I’ve felt through volunteering and actively contributing to the community. This involvement has not only allowed me to make a tangible difference but has also created invaluable networking opportunities.

While my current studies are focused on accounting, which is often perceived as quite dry and mathematical, the most interesting thing about me is actually my diverse background in community engagement and a past role as a Marketing Intern at Vietnam International Fashion Week. Before diving into numbers, I had the exciting opportunity to run large-scale events with over 3,000 guests and work within the incredibly fast-paced fashion industry. I absolutely adore fashion, and this experience allowed me to truly connect with that passion. In fact, my favorite show to watch is Miss Universe, which perfectly captures that blend of glamour and global connection that I find so fascinating. It’s a fun contrast to my current academic path!

To all Brock students, I strongly encourage you to embrace every opportunity and be proactive throughout your academic journey. This is a unique time to not only excel in your studies but also to make new connections and lasting friendships. I highly recommend getting involved by joining clubs and taking on leadership roles; these experiences are incredibly enriching and will be invaluable assets to highlight on your CV and resume for your future endeavors. Beyond academics and involvement, it’s vital that we all collectively support mental health awareness and actively fight against any form of discrimination. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, we can all contribute to a truly positive and impactful university experience for everyone.

Jay

INDIA

Third year Computer Science Honours student Jay Shah is from Ahmedabad, India which is a UNESCO World Heritage City renowned for its rich cultural heritage, robust infrastructure, and delicious cuisine. Jay identifies with the Asian, Indian, and BIPOC communities and chose Canada for its world-class education system, inclusive and multicultural society, and robust infrastructure that supports a high quality of life and academic success.

Volunteering at the International Student Orientations has been one of my most memorable experiences at Brock. I still remember my orientation, and the nerves and anxious feelings that came along with me. Since then, returning each year as a volunteer has become a personal checkpoint. It reminds me of how far I have come and allows me to support others as they take their first steps in a journey I know so well.

I am super nerdy. I love learning new things and hearing new stories. This is especially true when it comes to people. So on that note, if you see me on campus, don’t hesitate to start a conversation and tell me the most interesting thing about you! I’d love to hear it.

Be Ambitious! Chase your goals with intent and intensity – but remember, it’s okay to ask for help along the way. Never hesitate to reach out for support when you need it. I believe in you.

Rumman

BANGLADESH

Rumma Rafiq is a fourth year Business Administration Co-op student who identifies with the South Asian, Bangladeshi and BIPOC communities. Rumman loves working with people and plans to use her Human Resources degree from Brock to become a People and Culture leader in the public service sector while also focusing on work with social businesses. Her goal is to create sustainable change and positive global impact particularly in the mental-health, gender & racial equity and climate change sectors.

My very first time attending Badger Fest during O-Week! Brock transformed into a vibrant kaleidoscope of colors with its carnival, concert, and community fair. Enjoying each activity with new friends and representing different clubs made me feel that strong Badger spirit – something much needed at the start of a new school year.

I landed my very first desk job in Canada by walking into an office and handing the manager my resume after a short pitch – a rather cinematic moment that taught me how taking a chance on yourself can pay off. I love budget meal-prepping, making matcha, and cooking pasta – to the point that I once even owned a pasta business!

No matter what you like, believe in, or are passionate about – you will find a community for it at Brock. The best bonds I’ve made at university started off with a simple hello, so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Take up space and remember that we are all pieces of a complete puzzle – each and every one of us matters. Don’t let any failure falter your overall progress, keep an open mind and be sure to become your biggest cheerleader – it works magic on your motivation!

Andri

Trinidad & Tobago

Second year Data Science and Analytics student Andri Hudlin, who identifies as Afro-Carribean, advises incoming students to learn about other cultures and share their own as well. As a returning ambassador, she loved her experience working alongside dedicated peers and staff, all coming together to support international students and hopes to do the same this coming year with a new lens on the international student experience.

My most memorable experience at Brock so far has been attending Brock’s Community Cook Alongs. I learned about different cultures through food, while learning to make a new dish and meeting new people. It is a quaint event which adds to the intimate, relaxed nature.

The most interesting thing about me is that I’ve lived in 3 countries by the time I was 21.
A fun fact about me is that I have been an extra in a commercial.

Your time at Brock is what you make it; so why not make it memorable!

Go Badgers!

Irene

India & UAE

Irene Charley is a returning ambassador in her fourth year of Biomedical Sciences. Irene is back as an ambassador because it has been one of the most meaningful parts of her Brock journey. Irene genuinely enjoys connecting with international students, helping them adjust, and sharing her experience to support their transition.

I had such a great time being part of the Lunar New Year celebration! We got to try fun crafts, try our hand at calligraphy, and learn about how different cultures like Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese celebrate the New Year in their unique ways. Of course, the highlight for me was the food stations! Trying authentic dishes that are traditionally part of the celebrations was not only delicious but also such a fun cultural experience. The night market was an absolute blast! Food is one of the best ways to bring people from different backgrounds together!

I can play the drums, and in high school, I played kabaddi and football competitively. I also love traveling and exploring new places. This mix of music, sports, and adventure keeps life exciting!

University is a time to discover new places, people, and parts of yourself. Take advantage of every opportunity, step out of your comfort zone, and don’t forget to take care of your mental and physical well-being along the way. You’re not alone, there’s a whole community here to support you.

Ray

Taiwan

Ray is a fourth year Medical Sciences returning ambassador wanted to be an ambassador again to “to live in people’s heads rent-free”. By that, he means he enjoys bringing smiles to people’s faces and making Brock feel like their second home. As an international student, Ray is familiar how anxious being abroad can be and  wants to make sure no one else feels that way.

I was honoured to host a special tour group of principals and education leaders from my home country, Taiwan. Hearing how proud they were of me reassured me that I made the right decision by becoming a Badger, as I would’ve never reached where I am right now if I were not given the various opportunities that Brock provided.

If you ever spot me around campus, ask to see my socks. You’ll never catch me without Snoopy socks.

Don’t let others define who you are or what you can or cannot do. Success is relative. Keep fighting for your passion, I’m proud of you! 🙂

Nethra

INDIA

Nethra Balaji, is a first year Medical Sciences student. Nehtra has been following Brock since grade 9 and was drawn to Brock’s location in a UNESCO biosphere reserve. As an incoming student, she looks forward to being a part of different clubs on and off campus including: Brock ISA and the Humane Society of Greater Niagara.

I plan to study B.Sc. Medical Sciences for fulfilling my pre-med requirements, aiming to go to medical school for Plastic Surgery.

I have way too many hobbies—public speaking, graphic design, writing, paper quilling, nail art, Carnatic music, community service… and I even make notebooks by hand from unused paper!

Use all the resources Brock provides! Especially for international students, every webinar, event, and email contains invaluable information to help you get settled and succeed at Brock. There are excellent resources available throughout the year, be sure to take advantage of them.

Daniel

Nigeria

As a returning ambassador, Daniel wanted to be an ambassador again because it was such a rewarding experience. Spending over 80 hours with more than 100 students each week provided Daniel with the unique opportunity to connect deeply with individuals from diverse backgrounds. The sense of community, the meaningful conversations, and the incredible support from staff and fellow ambassadors made the experience truly special, and it’s something he is excited to be a part of again.

Honestly, every day at Brock has been memorable in its own way—there’s always something new happening and opportunities to grow. But my most memorable experience so far was serving as an ambassador last year. It gave me the chance to promote Brock through videos, connect with new students, participate in exciting events, and truly stand out as a leader on campus. That experience allowed me to grow both personally and professionally, and it remains a highlight of my time at Brock.

One of the most interesting things about me is that I love learning and listening to people’s stories. Even though I’m studying Medical Sciences, many students often assume I’m in Business because I enjoy talking about finances and personal development. I’m also passionate about learning different cultures and languages—basically, I love exploring anything beyond the boundaries of my degree!

To all Brock students: remember, it’s only a matter of time before your degree is complete. Every interaction, moment, greeting, or piece of advice has the potential to open doors and spark new ideas or connections. Stay involved and engaged—university is more than just classes; it’s a place to grow, explore, and discover yourself. One of the greatest gifts a university degree offers, aside from the certificate itself, is the awareness it brings. Don’t let the waters of your journey stay still—let them be stirred, challenged, and transformed.

Malik

PAKISTAN & UAE

Malik Abdullah is in his third-year Bachelor of Accounting Co-op. Malik grew up in Dubai and loves that you can go from a desert safari in one day to skiing inside a mall the next! This taught him that how to connect with people from all backgrounds and has shaped who he is today. Malik firmly believes that being involved in extracurricular activities is important since university is about more than just getting good grades.

Taking part in the Goodman Case Competition was one of my most memorable Brock experiences. From studying the case to brainstorming ideas till late at night, my team and I had an awesome time working together. We gave it our all because we were truly excited to be involved. The journey we took as a team, the giggles, the pressure, and the sense of accomplishment were what most impressed me, not the finished presentation. It made me realize how much connection and progress can result from simply trying your hardest.

Growing up in the UAE, I’ve always taken driving seriously. I used to race for fun, and I still treat every drive like it’s Fast & Furious, making every trip feel like a movie scene. But if you’re in my car, you’re my responsibility and 100% safe.

Get out of your comfort zone and make the most of your time at Brock. Whether it’s volunteering, joining a club, or just having a conversation with someone new, take that first step because making connections is a skill that will help you in every area of your life. You’ve made it this far for a reason, and your family believes in you. Keep growing and make everyone in your circle proud.
