WSET Level 1 Award in Wines

This WSET Course is designed to help beginners who are starting a career in wine or hospitality as well as enthusiasts exploring wine for personal interest. This course will explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately and make food and wine pairings. The course prepares you for WSET qualifications and they are guided by a WSET educator.

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is a beginner level qualification for anyone seeking a sound introduction to wine. Through this short interactive online course, you’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell and taste.  You’ll also gain the essential skills to describe wines and make food and wine pairings.

Upon completion you’ll gain a globally recognized qualification and the knowledge to help you explore the world of wine with confidence.

Program Information

What you’ll learn studying WSET Level 1 Award In wines:

  • Know the key stages in grape growing and winemaking.
  • Know the types, characteristics, and styles of wines made from the principal grape varieties and other examples of wines.
  • Know the key principles and practices involved in the storage and service of wine.
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT).
  • Understand the principles of food and wine pairing.

  • Winemaking: Parts of a grape, Grape Growing, Climate, Alcoholic Fermentation, and Production of still white, red and rosé wines.
  • Characteristics: Principal types and styles of wines, Grape Varieties, and Examples of wines from principal grape varieties.
  • Principles: Storage, Service temperature description, Serving, Principal food and wine interactions.

All necessary materials are included in course fees.

Online:

  • WSET Textbook and Study Guide

Wine Samples are not included in course fees. Learners are responsible for sourcing wine samples.

Prerequisites

  • Online: Must be of legal drinking age.
  • General computer literacy, internet navigation and at least a good level of English language proficiency.
  • There are no educational prerequisites for this course.

Technology Requirements

  • Working laptop with high-speed internet access for online components.

To successfully complete your program you will be required to take an examination consisting of 30 question multiple-choice questions.  55% is required to achieve a pass.  Online learners will take the examination online by remote invigilation, you will need:  One device with a webcam and microphone to take your exam on such as a laptop or MacBook; plus, one device to record you taking the exam: a smart phone or tablet.

Successful candidates receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

Intake Details

The online delivery of WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is a 4-week course.

  • 7 module online learning program with WSET Course Provider
  • 6 hours of personal study time
  • 45 minutes examination
