Teaching English Language Learners, Part 1

Teaching English Language Learners, Part I, is designed to enhance candidates’ professional practice and knowledge in teaching English to diverse learners. Key areas of focus include curriculum knowledge, pedagogical strategies, and creating a conducive learning environment. The course underscores the importance of an anti-oppression foundation, addressing biases and barriers that may affect learners, and incorporates ethical standards for teaching practice. It incorporates First Nations, Métis, and Inuit histories, perspectives, and knowledge systems. The course follows current Ontario curriculum, ministry policies, and relevant legislation, emphasizing accessibility and special education needs.

It provides instruction on theories of learning and teaching, with an emphasis on learner-centred pedagogy, and supports for learners, including mental health and wellness. Methods for teaching, assessing, and evaluating students are covered, along with pathway and transition planning. The course promotes safe, equitable, and inclusive learning environments and encourages the integration of e-learning principles.

Culturally responsive and relevant pedagogical practices are encouraged, and students learn to apply principles of social justice and democratic citizenship, as well as environmental sustainability in teaching. The course underscores shared responsibility for learning, emphasizing collaboration with families, caregivers, and the community. Lastly, the course aims to build professional learning communities, fostering collaboration and leadership within the teaching community.

Program Information

What you’ll learn studying Reading, Part 1 AQ:

  • Critically explore and interpret Ontario’s curriculum, policies, frameworks, strategies and guidelines for teaching reading
  • Analyze and integrate learning theories and the individual strengths, styles and needs of learners
  • Collaborate with colleagues and reflected upon learning throughout this course to help develop and/or support a strong reading program for learners

Materials

There are no additional resources required for this course.

Technology

  • Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • Access to reliable  high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
  • Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.

Prerequisites

  • OCT Membership with qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior.

To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.

Intake Details

For ASY- Asynchronous Online delivery of this course, the course will have a set start and finish date, along with set due dates for assignments and assessments. This does not require real-time communications. However, instructors may arrange optional real-time online group discussions during your course. You will not be required to be on-campus for any reason.
