Using an integrated approach to curriculum, this course will enable teachers to receive additional qualifications for the senior division in math. Topics such as curriculum planning, teaching strategies and assessment of learning experiences for the senior division will be included in this course.

By completing this course, you will understand

  • how The Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession and The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession form the foundation and guide the daily practices of all Ontario educators
  • the issues and challenges related to the teaching of mathematics to adolescent students
  • Ministry of Education curriculum and policy documents and guidelines related to adolescents
  • how effective assessment supports instructional decision-making and student success
  • a variety of instructional practices that impact student learning that equity, inclusion and culturally relevant pedagogy play an integral role in an effective mathematics programme
  • the legal responsibilities of educators and legal issues relating to adolescents and be able to create a learning environment that is conducive to the intellectual, social, emotional, physical, linguistic, cultural, spiritual, and moral development of the adolescent
  • implement ministry and board policies and guidelines when creating short- and long-range plans for a math course
  • create an effective and manageable assessment plan that supports your professional judgement
  • design lessons that make use of high-impact instructional strategies and include engaging, relevant and challenging learning tasks
  • identify and address individual student needs using accommodations, modifications and differentiated instructional practice tailored to the developmental needs of adolescents
  • respond responsibly and ethically to legal issues that may arise in the course of your work

Technology

  • Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • Access to reliable  high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
  • Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.

Prerequisites

  • OCT MEMBERSHIP confirming you are an OCT member with an undergraduate degree.
  • YOUR UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT(S)*
    Your transcript(s) must show: The equivalent of 3.0 full undergraduate/graduate credits in Math or the equivalent of 2.0 full undergraduate/graduate credits if you already hold another senior qualification. *Higher level math credits required – year 3 and above.

To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.

Intake Details

For ASY- Asynchronous Online delivery of this course, the course will have a set start and finish date, along with set due dates for assignments and assessments. This does not require real-time communications. However, instructors may arrange optional real-time online group discussions during your course. You will not be required to be on-campus for any reason.
