This course explores the Catholic religious education within the context of Ontario’s curriculum, policy, and Catholic educational mission and evangelization.
In this course, you will explore theological, biblical, ecclesial, ethical, and pedagogical foundations that inform professional practice in Catholic schools. Through critical inquiry, reflective practice, and collaborative learning, you will examine faith formation, inclusive and culturally responsive approaches, assessment practices, and professional identity in Catholic education. You will engage with research, policy, and theological sources to design learning experiences and professional resources that support student learning, well-being, and spiritual development.
The course culminates in a professional practice portfolio that integrates a course journal, theory and practice and supports leadership in Catholic religious education.

- Analyze Religious Education curriculum and policy in relation to contemporary educational contexts.
- Evaluate theological, biblical, and ecclesial foundations for Catholic religious education.
- Integrate Catholic Social Teaching and Gospel values into curriculum planning and assessment.
- Apply ethical, moral, and spiritual frameworks to professional decision making.
- Design inclusive, culturally responsive religious education learning environments.
- Critically examine faith formation, spirituality, and identity in Catholic education.
- Synthesize research and theory to enhance religious education pedagogy and practice.
- Develop instructional and assessment practices that support learner agency and faith development.
- Create a professional resource that advances religious education practice in a Catholic school context.
Prerequisites
- OCT MEMBERSHIP with qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior.

Technology
- Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
- Access to reliable high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
- Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.
This is an asynchronous, cohort based, instructor-led course with defined start date, end date and specific module due dates. Learners are not expected to be online at a certain time of day, but they are expected to work through the material alongside other learners. Learners should expect to spend 16-18 hours on coursework throughout each week to stay on track.
To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.
