
Building strong, capable readers requires intentional, responsive teaching grounded in research and guided by curriculum. This course empowers educators across all grade levels to deepen their understanding of how reading develops, apply effective and inclusive instructional strategies, and make meaningful connections to learners’ identities, cultures, and communities.
Through a balance of theory and practical application, participants will explore how to support diverse learners using evidence-based practices, purposeful assessment, and instructional approaches that not only reflect the Science of Reading but also center equity, voice, and multiple ways of knowing. By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the tools and insights to plan responsive reading programs that foster success for every learner.

What you’ll learn studying Reading, Part 1 AQ:
- Apply current research and Ontario curriculum expectations to support effective reading instruction and learner success.
- Design inclusive and culturally responsive reading programs that reflect diverse identities, perspectives, and ways of knowing, including Indigenous knowledge systems.
- Use assessment for, as, and of learning to monitor reading development and identify students who may be at risk for reading difficulties.
- Implement evidence-based instructional strategies, adaptive supports, and assistive technologies to support diverse learner.
- Develop collaborative and reflective practices that support literacy leadership, mentorship, and ongoing professional learning.

Technology
- Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
- Access to reliable high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
- Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.
Prerequisites
- OCT Membership with qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior.
This is an asynchronous, cohort based, instructor-led course with defined start date, end date and specific module due dates. Learners are not expected to be online at a certain time of day, but they are expected to work through the material alongside other learners. Learners should expect to spend 16-18 hours on coursework throughout each week to stay on track.
To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.
