The Math, Primary and Junior – Specialist Additional Qualification is designed for educators that are considering taking on leadership roles in Mathematics. Grounded in the Ontario College of Teachers’ Standards of Practice and current research, this course will support you in learning how to guide school-wide improvement, support colleagues, and build collective capacity in primary/junior mathematics education.
You’ll look closely at what it means to lead others by supporting them in their math programming with a focus on being inclusive, anti-oppressive, and culturally responsive. You’ll have opportunities to reflect on your role in supporting truth and reconciliation and develop a leadership approach that centres equity in your school. You’ll also explore key frameworks like Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning, to give you the tools necessary to make leadership decisions that support all learners. This course will deepen your understanding of algebraic reasoning and assessment practices you can confidently use to support your school community as a primary/junior math leader. Throughout the course, you’ll have opportunities to put your learning into action by designing meaningful professional learning experiences for teachers and thinking about leadership that extends beyond your school.
Program Information
What you’ll learn and do in Mathematics, Primary and Junior, Specialist:
- Support educators in implementing fair, responsive, flexible and culturally relevant assessment practices aligned with the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum and grounded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
- Interpret and respond to school and system-level policies through a lens of equity, decolonization, and reconciliation to support equity and inclusion in mathematics education.
- Apply inclusive and anti-oppressive frameworks to lead and support colleagues in improving mathematics education that reflects diverse identities, experiences, and needs of learners.
- Design and facilitate professional learning opportunities to build educators’ understanding of mathematics and equip them to address common instructional challenges using evidence-informed strategies.
- Develop and apply a leadership approach that centres student voice, promotes a culture of equity and collaboration, and supports inclusive mathematics education for all.
- Lead collaborative inquiries and professional discussions that explore current issues, research and innovations in mathematics education to enhance classroom practice.

- CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM
Signed by a Supervisory Official from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course.
Note: A new form is always required for a Specialist course as experience is course/subject specific.

Technology
- Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
- Access to reliable high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
- Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.
This is an asynchronous, cohort based, instructor-led course with defined start date, end date and specific module due dates. Learners are not expected to be online at a certain time of day, but they are expected to work through the material alongside other learners. Learners should expect to spend 16-18 hours on coursework throughout each week to stay on track.
To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.
