Professional Development is defined as learning and development opportunities, which are offered either through the University or externally and is intended to enhance an employee’s job performance and /or career development. Therefore, it is the intention of the Social Sciences, to establish Professional Development/Leadership funding for Support and Administrative Staff and outline criteria for eligibility.

Establish an internal fund to provide Professional Development/Leadership funds for Support and Administrative Staff members within the Faculty of Social Science, in support of registration fees and travel costs associated with attending a conference, convention, workshop or seminar.
This applies to full-time and part-time Support and Administrative Staff members within the Faculty of Social Sciences.
- Professional Development/Leadership funds are at the discretion of the Dean of Social Sciences and limited to a maximum of $2,000 including taxes (Canadian funds) every two years.
- To qualify for Professional Development/Leadership funds, permanent Support and Administrative Staff must exhaust other avenues of funding e.g. Unit funds or previously negotiated funds as part of their salary contract, prior to application.
- Support and Administrative Staff Professional Development/Leadership funds can be applied against a conference, convention, workshop or seminar registration, return economy airfare, train fare or mileage (at Brock University rate), ground transportation, hotel accommodation and meals (receipts required) or per diems https://www.njc-cnm.gc.ca/directive/d10/v238/s659/sv7/en.
- Permanent Support and Administrative Staff members should submit an on-line Professional Development/Leadership funds application, to the Dean of Social Sciences in advance of event registration and at least two weeks prior to the proposed travel date.
- A Professional Development/Leadership funds application must include written rationale on travel out of province (i.e. location, practicality, economical) and how the requested support will enhance job performance and/or career development.
- The Executive Assistant to the Dean of Social Sciences will notify an applicant by email, as to whether the Professional Development/Leadership Funds application was approved.
- Travel and Expense reports submitted for SAC approval should be in accordance with Brock University’s Travel and Related Expense policy and should include:
1. The Executive Assistant email approval for Professional Development/Leadership funds, together with all original receipts.
2. Itemization of “Expense Item” in Workday charging:

- Support and Administrative Staff Professional Development/Leadership funds are currently discretionary one-time funds allotted to individual Support and Administrative Staff members during a two year time period. Individual allotted funds not utilized during this time will not be carried forward to subsequent years.
