As enrolment climbs, Brock puts out call to landlords

MEDIA RELEASE: 24 July 2019 – R00119

With Brock University continuing to draw more students to Niagara region — last year’s enrolment crept past the 19,000 mark — the institution wants to identify more rental properties in nearby communities where students can live.

With its own 2,400 residence beds always fully booked, the University has an off-campus housing office that helps students find a home in area neighbourhoods.

As part of the effort, Brock invites landlords to advertise on a dedicated webpage that is a high-traffic destination for students seeking accommodation.

But they’re also asking empty-nesters — or anyone with a surplus room or two — to consider renting out to the students who come from across Canada and more than 100 countries around the world.

To actively support landlords, Brock’s off-campus housing staff hold education sessions throughout the year on landlord and tenant rights, meet with property managers and also visit students living in local communities.

Brad Clarke, Brock’s Director of Student Life and Community Experience, says renting to students can be more than a way to help pay the bills. Many hosts report that these young adults also make for good company.

“Renting to students can be a really positive experience. As Brock grows in size and reputation, so do the opportunities for local landlords and homeowners,” says Clarke. “We’re looking to expand the accommodation options for our students who are coming to Brock from outside of Niagara and have diverse preferences as to the types of living arrangements they’re seeking.”

Clarke points out that the summer months are a great time to spread the word about accommodations to students who are looking to start leases in September.
