President’s Golf Classic raises funds for Brock student- athletes

MEDIA RELEASE: 30 May 2018 – Brock Sports

Brock University student-athletes will benefit from the $75,000 raised Monday, May 28 during the 16th annual President’s Golf Classic.

More than 140 golfers descended on St. Catharines Golf and Country Club to show their support of the 900 student-athletes at Brock University. The tournament, originally founded by former President David Atkinson and the late David S. Howes, raises funds that have a direct impact on the lives of students who are balancing athletics with academics.

“With countless hours spent studying, attending classes, practising, travelling, playing and working out, there truly isn’t enough time to work a job,” says Clint Winsdor, men’s hockey goalie and Brock Sports Male Athlete of the Year. “Receiving a President’s Golf Classic scholarship relieves a lot of stress from athletes like myself. This scholarship is very important as it allows us to put our focus on two main things: our school work and our sport.”

Stepping up this year to show their support for Brock student-athletes was the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club. At Monday’s event, President John F. T. Scott presented Brock University President Gervan Fearon and Athletes of the Year Jessica Brouillette and Windsor a cheque for a newly established scholarship for a student-athlete attending Brock and playing on the curling or golf team.

“Building championship programs takes support from events like the President’s Golf Classic, as well as partnerships with organizations such as the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club,” said Neil Lumsden, Director, Brock Sports. “These crucial funds allow us to continue to attract and recruit some of the best student-athletes from our own backyard and from across Canada and the world.”

For the second year in a row, the presenting sponsor was Rankin Construction. Other major sponsors included: AllianceBernstein, AON Risk Solutions, architects Tillmann Ruth Robinson, Brand Blvd., Brock Plaza Corporation, Brock University Alumni Association, Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, Cinema Stage, Deloitte, GardaWorld, HUB International, Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate, McCallum Sather Architects, Mercer, Partridge Wealth Management, PepsiCo, Scotiabank, Sodexo, Sullivan Mahoney LLP, Whiting Equipment, Workday and WSP.
