Small army of Brock volunteers ready to help incoming students on Move In Day

MEDIA ADVISORY: R00186 – 31 August 2016

It’s a logistical masterpiece and a great example of students volunteering their time to help fellow students.

The annual tradition that is Brock University’s Move In Day takes place Sunday, Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. when more than 2,200 mostly first-year students are moved into their residences.

The big move is made possible by months of planning and the muscle power of 850 student volunteers, who work in teams to unload the incoming students’ vehicles and then carry everything into rooms in one of Brock’s seven residences.

“Move In Day is a team effort that we could not do without the hundreds of volunteers and the many staff members from a dozen different departments who all roll up their sleeves and show up for a busy day,” said Jamie Fleming, Director, Department of Residences.

He said the Move In Day tradition has grown with the University’s enrolment and expansion of residences over the past many years.

“Planning starts when we’re observing and making notes for next year. So we started working on this year’s Move In Day at this time last year,” said Fleming.

The whole move will take place over six hours on Sunday, with each student being assigned a one-hour window of when they can arrive based on their residence building and floor.

One they’re moved in, students will have access to a variety of University services that will be open Sunday such as the Brock Card office, IT help desk, Campus Store, Financial Aid and Registration offices, Parking Services and athletic complex.

Because of the amount of space and organization required to move 2,200 students into their new living spaces, parking and access around campus will be limited. Anyone visiting the University for other purposes is asked to park in Lot A.

Students looking for more information on Move In Day schedules, recommendations and locations should visit the Department of Residences website.

NOTE: Media are invited to attend Sunday’s Move In Day. Jamie Fleming, along with volunteers and incoming students, will be available for interviews.
