Teaching Students with Communication Needs

In this course, you will examine with resources and learner profiles, create educational resources and engage in professional discourse. Through reflections and a culminating project, you will apply evidence-based strategies to scenario-based activities. These activities are designed to enhance your understanding and ability to effectively support learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder. 

Understanding and supporting learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is critical to creating an inclusive and effective learning environment. This course provides a comprehensive overview of ASD, covering symptoms, diagnosis, myths, effective instructional practices, behavior management strategies and the importance of neurodiversity. You will explore Ontario’s educational policies, develop practical resources and learn about the intersectionality of ASD with gender, culture and other identities

Program Information

What you’ll learn studying Teaching Students with Communication Needs:

  • Create practical, evidence-based educator resources to support learners with ASD 
  • Critically evaluate various aspects of ASD, including diagnostic criteria, early signs, long-term outcomes, historical contributions, common misconceptions and evidence-based interventions  
  • Reflect on your understanding and experiences related to ASD to better support learners and foster a more inclusive and effective learning environment 
  • Examine and interpret the effectiveness of different instructional and behavioural strategies and support programs to enhance the learning and development  
  • Critically analyze cultural perspectives and their impact on educational and community-level support 
  • Evaluate the implications of different disability models, symbols and intersectional identities to develop effective, inclusive support strategies  

Materials

There are no additional resources required for this course.

Technology

  • Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • Access to reliable  high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
  • Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.

Prerequisites

  • OCT Membership

To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.

Intake Details

For ASY- Asynchronous Online delivery of this course, the course will have a set start and finish date, along with set due dates for assignments and assessments. This does not require real-time communications. However, instructors may arrange optional real-time online group discussions during your course. You will not be required to be on-campus for any reason.
