What you’ll learn studying Honour Specialist: Math AQ:
- Know current curriculum policy for all grade levels K-12 for mathematics and methods of implementing these policies
- Understand the issues and challenges related to the teaching of mathematics
- Know child and adolescent developmental and social factors that influence the learning of mathematics
- Demonstrate competency in the use of technology tools related to the learning of mathematics
- Have an overview of related subject guidelines and the place of numeracy expectations in all subjects.
- Know assessment and evaluation principles as related to mathematics education and the ability to use them in planning for learning
- Know the growth and development of mathematical thinking including the acquisition of skills in problem-solving
- Be able to create learning environments conducive to the intellectual, social, emotional, physical, linguistic, cultural, spiritual, and moral development of students including those with special needs.
- Evaluate all forms of teaching resources including basic, scientific, and graphing calculators, computer software, the Internet, textbooks, other print materials, videos, and concrete materials.
- Understand the importance of department heads and other leadership roles in the improvement of mathematics learning, especially through organizational and interpersonal skills, and promoting collaboration with various communities.
- Know that mathematics is a language and the importance of reading, writing, listening and speaking in the learning of mathematics.

Technology
- Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
- Access to reliable high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
- Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.
Prerequisites
- 1) OCT MEMBERSHIP Confirming that your Certificate of Qualifications shows certification in at least two teaching divisions (Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Senior).
- 2) YOUR UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT(S)
Your transcript(s) must show:- The equivalent of 9.0 full year undergraduate/graduate courses in this teaching subject with a minimum ‘B’ average in these courses
- A Bachelor’s degree at an accredited university with the equivalent of 20.0 full year courses
- 3) CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course.
- The Ontario College of Teachers defines “Supervisory Official” as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the “supervisory official” is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.
- Please note that a new form is always required for a Specialist course as experience is course/subject specific.
To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.
Intake Details
For ASY- Asynchronous Online delivery of this course, the course will have a set start and finish date, along with set due dates for assignments and assessments. This does not require real-time communications. However, instructors may arrange optional real-time online group discussions during your course. You will not be required to be on-campus for any reason.
