Honour Specialist: English AQ

Building on prior knowledge and experience of a Secondary English classroom teacher, the Honour Specialist, English AQ course is designed for educators who aim to develop their leadership skills and expand their expertise in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.

Grounded in the Ontario College of Teachers Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession and the Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession, this course fosters critical reflection, inquiry and dialogue addressing issues and challenges of 21st-century English programming. 

Candidates will explore curriculum development and implementation, instructional strategies, and assessment and evaluation practices that support the diverse needs of students in English classes. You will engage in leadership topics while establishing a personal vision and direction for an English department and analyze technology and trends in literacy and digital learning for today’s students. 

By exploring recommended texts and discussing with peers in each module, this course is feedback driven and responsive to the learning of its participants. Each module includes a culminating activity that builds practical and applicable content for use in the classroom and the school.  Through collaborative inquiry and applied learning, candidates will create resources, culminating in a portfolio of reflection to support their department or school leadership. 

 

Program Information

What you’ll learn studying Honour Specialist: English AQ:

  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of curriculum documents, frameworks and policies to create programming tailored to diverse student needs, pathways, and abilities.
  • Facilitate professional dialogue and collaborative inquiry, reflect on personal leadership experience, and analyze current articles to refine a personal leadership vision for themself and a department.
  • Critically examine text selection, literacy instruction, and assessment strategies to promote diverse voices and perspectives in the English classroom.
  • Design and implement inclusive lessons and course structures that meet curriculum expectations and support the needs of today’s learners.
  • Utilize and analyze trends in digital literacy, integrating educational technology, research-based assessment and evaluation practices, and instructional strategies
  • Explore and apply innovative educational technologies, multimodal classroom resources and media literacy strategies to engage and enrich Intermediate English instruction.

Prerequisites

  • 1) OCT MEMBERSHIP Confirming that your Certificate of Qualifications shows certification in at least two teaching divisions (Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Senior).
  • 2) YOUR UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT(S)
    Your transcript(s) must show:

    • The equivalent of 9.0 full year undergraduate/graduate courses in this teaching subject with a minimum ‘B’ average in these courses (3.0 of the 9.0 required courses must be in English Literature). Please note we will accept a successfully completed graduate level thesis as 1.0 full year course.
    • A Bachelor’s degree at an accredited university with the equivalent of 20.0 full year courses
  • 3) CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM Signed by a Supervisory Official* from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course.
    • The Ontario College of Teachers defines “Supervisory Official” as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity. For a teacher employed by a private school, the “supervisory official” is the Ministry of Education official (Education Officer) appointed to your school. For overseas experience the appropriate Supervisory Official is the person your Principal reports to.
  • Please note that a new form is always required for a Specialist course as experience is course/subject specific.

There are no additional resources required for this course.

Technology

  • Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • Access to reliable  high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
  • Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.

This is an asynchronous, cohort based, instructor-led course with defined start date, end date and specific module due dates. Learners are not expected to be online at a certain time of day, but they are expected to work through the material alongside other learners. Learners should expect to spend 16-18 hours on coursework throughout each week to stay on track.

To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.
