Guidance and Career Education, Specialist

Effective guidance leadership connects policy to practice and vision to action. In this course, you will develop the skills to lead ethical, inclusive, and future-focused guidance and career education programs that respond to diverse learners, emerging trends, and evolving system priorities. 

This course focuses on leadership in Guidance and Career Education, with an emphasis on equity, collaboration, and learner well-being. As a guidance leader, you will examine how inclusive programming supports meaningful pathways for all learners. You will reflect on ethical decision-making, dismantling systemic barriers, and integrating Indigenous perspectives into your practice. Throughout the course, you will connect policy to practice, explore emerging trends, and develop strategies to lead responsive, learner-centred programs that adapt to evolving school and community needs.

Program Information

What you’ll learn studying Guidance and Career Education, Specialist:

  • Examine the Ontario College of Teachers’ Standards of Practice, Ethical Standards, and the Ontario Leadership Framework 
  • Analyze how these frameworks inform ethical leadership and decision-making in guidance and career education 
  • Design and evaluate inclusive guidance and career education programming 
  • Integrate Learning for All and Creating Pathways to Success into program planning and delivery 
  • Foster collaborative relationships with learners, families, colleagues, and community partners 
  • Promote equity, inclusion, and learner success within school and system initiatives 
  • Apply approaches that support learner well-being, including mental health, resiliency, and social-emotional learning 
  • Assess and integrate emerging trends and technologies into professional practice 
  • Lead anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy (CRRP) in guidance and career education 
  • Develop and implement policies that support truth, reconciliation, and decolonization through Indigenous perspectives 

Prerequisites

  • OCT MEMBERSHIP showing completion of Part 2
  • CONFIRMATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE FORM
    Signed by a Supervisory Official from your School Board confirming that you have two years (388 days) of teaching experience since becoming a certified teacher, one year (194 days) of which is in the subject area of this course
  • Note: A new form is always required for a Specialist course as experience is course/subject specific.

There are no additional resources required for this course.

Technology

  • Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • Access to reliable  high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
  • Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.

This is an asynchronous, cohort based, instructor-led course with defined start date, end date and specific module due dates. Learners are not expected to be online at a certain time of day, but they are expected to work through the material alongside other learners. Learners should expect to spend 16-18 hours on coursework throughout each week to stay on track.

To successfully complete your program, you will complete all assignments, activities and discussions by the posted deadlines in the program.

Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.
