Program Information

What you’ll learn studying French as a Second Language, Part 1 AQ:

  • Articulate and uphold the ethical standards and professional expectations essential for teaching French as a Second Language in Ontario.
  • Navigate and utilize Learning Management Systems effectively to enhance the FSL teaching and learning experience.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in the FSL classroom, guided by the Ontario Human Rights Code and AODA.
  • Appreciate the historical significance and evolution of languages in Canada, with a particular emphasis on the French language’s role.
  • Implement Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy (CRRP) in their classrooms, ensuring that students of diverse backgrounds feel represented and included.
  • Analyze and apply the various regulations, benefits, and structures of FSL programs at the district level in Ontario.
  • Integrate modern technology, including online learning modalities, AI tools, and assistive technologies, to enhance FSL instruction.
  • Design lessons and strategies that account for the diverse needs of students, with particular attention to special education considerations and intersectionality.
  • Effectively assess and evaluate students, incorporating tools like metacognition and creating report cards tailored to the FSL context.
  • Foster a positive and culturally aware classroom environment, integrating elements such as music, play-based learning, and cooperative strategies.

Materials

There are no additional resources required for this course.

Technology

  • Laptop/PC: Windows 10 or higher or equivalent operating system with recommended 8 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of free hard disk space and Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • Access to reliable  high-speed broadband internet access (Cable, DSL, LTE) with a minimum bandwidth of 15 Mbps is recommended.
  • Included integrated webcam and microphone recommended.

Prerequisites

1. OCT MEMBERSHIP with qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior.

  • *If you have Intermediate French as a qualification, OCT considers this equivalent to FSL Part 1.

2. YOUR UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT(S)

  • Your transcript(s) must show the equivalent of 5.0 full-year undergraduate courses in French or the completion of a degree in the French language

or

  • Bilingual/Immersion/Extended Certificate and a copy of your transcript from an anglophone secondary school or a copy of your transcript if you have graduated from a francophone secondary school. We will also accept test scores determined to be suitable by the Department of Continuing Teacher Education.

or

  • A DELF assessment (done with a provider of your choosing) with a result of B2 or higher.

*Tech Certified Teachers who do not hold an undergraduate degree are not eligible to take this course.

To successfully complete your program, you will complete all components of the program. Your progress will be continuously evaluated using a variety of formative and/or summative assessments to receive a final mark. Information about these assessment methods will be provided in the Learning Management System on the first day of the program.

Intake Details

For ASY- Asynchronous Online delivery of this course, the course will have a set start and finish date, along with set due dates for assignments and assessments. This does not require real-time communications. However, instructors may arrange optional real-time online group discussions during your course. You will not be required to be on-campus for any reason.
