Funding for International Students from Outside of Canada

The following Global Affairs Canada scholarships are open to students from eligible countries to facilitate short-term study or research terms at Canadian institutions. At Brock, these scholarships support students to come through our inbound exchange program, or the Global Scholars Program through the University Mentorship pathway. Students who wish to take courses at Brock through the inbound exchange program must come from an existing partner institution with Brock.

Applications will be accepted until March 9th, 2026.

Study in Canada Scholarships

$10,000+ per term

Study in Canada Scholarships aim to increase opportunities for Canadian post-secondary institutions to welcome international students from a wide range of countries and territories on short-term exchanges for study or research.

Eligible applicants must be:

  • A citizen of an eligible country/territory:
    • Asia: Bangladesh, Nepal, Taiwan
    • Europe: Türkiye, Ukraine
    • Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia
    • Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda
  • A student enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country/territory.
  • Paying tuition fees to that institution at the time of application and for the full duration of your exchange.
  • Able to complete all project activities no later than September 30, 2027.

You are not eligible for this scholarship if:

  • You hold or have a pending application for Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
  • You are already participating in a scholarship program funded by the Government of Canada.
  • You are already enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

For your application to be complete, you must provide the following verified documents. Please note that Brock University is obligated to verify the authenticity of all documents received.

Please note:

  • Revised documents will not be accepted after the deadline.
  • Documents in a language other than English or French must be accompanied by a translation.

YOU NEED TO PROVIDE US WITH:

1. Proof of citizenship

  • A copy of the candidate’s passport or national identity card with a photo and valid dates.
  • Documents not accepted as proof of citizenship are: driver’s license, permanent residence card, work permit, student card, health card, birth certificate or baptismal certificate.
  • Proof of citizenship selected must be from the same country/territory as the citizenship selected in the online application form.

3. Letter of intent from you (maximum one page)

  • Explains the nature of studies or research to be undertaken.
  • Provides rationale for study in Canada and for the choice of institution, program and supervisor and how the proposed program of study or research will relate to their future career.

4. Letter of proof of full-time enrolment from your home institution – must be sent directly from your home institution to [email protected]

  • On official letterhead.
  • Dated within the last six months.
  • Confirms that the candidate is currently enrolled in a full-time program.
  • Copies of transcripts, a student card or a letter of admission are not acceptable.

5. Letter of support from your home institution (maximum one page) – must be sent directly from your home institution to [email protected]

  • On official letterhead.
  • Dated within the last six months.
  • From the candidate’s instructor, professor or international director.
  • Explains the nature of study or research to be undertaken in Canada and how the candidate and the home institution will benefit from this scholarship program.

6. Letter of invitation from the Canadian supervisor (research students only, maximum one page) – must be sent directly from the Canadian supervisor to [email protected]

  • On official letterhead
  • Dated within the last six months.
  • Signed by the Canadian supervisor.
  • Describes the nature and scope of the research collaboration with the student’s home institution.
  • Confirms their willingness to support and mentor the candidate during the exchange period.
  • Explains how the Canadian institution, supervisor and peers will benefit from the exchange.

The internal deadline for this application is March 9th, 2026.

Applicants can come to Brock through one of two pathways:

Student Exchange Program – if Brock and the host institution have an existing exchange agreement. You must be nominated by your home university by the existing process. Check with your home institution for more information.

Global Scholars Program – if you are a graduate student looking to conduct research or other academic related activity at Brock or work with a supervisor, you can apply to our  University Mentorship stream.

Brock is responsible for managing the selection and administration of Study in Canada Scholarships (SICS). While the selection decision will be made by Brock, the total number of applicants who will receive a scholarship will ultimately be determined by the total amount of funding awarded by Global Affairs Canada.

Canadian institutions are required by Global Affairs Canada to ensure geographic diversity and equitable gender representation in selected candidates.

Applications will be evaluated following Brock’s internal deadline based on the following criteria:

  • Merit of the proposed research or studies to be undertaken in Canada
  • Candidate motivation, including candidate’s rationale for choice of program and institution, and relevance to future educational and career goals
  • Anticipated benefits of how their research and studies will benefit their home country, home institution, and peers
  • Geographical diversity and equitable gender participation
  • Global Scholars Program only: Benefit to the Canadian institution, supervisor and peers, and commitment from the Brock’s supervisor to support and mentor the candidate
  • Exchange students only: partner rankings where multiple students are nominated by the candidates’ home university (where applicable)

Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP)

$8,000+ per term

The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program aims to support the development of human capital and the next generation of leaders in the Americas while strengthening the linkages between post-secondary institutions in Canada and the Americas.

Eligible applicants must be:

  • A citizen of an eligible country/territory:
    • Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos
    • Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama
    • North America: Mexico
    • South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
  • A student enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country/territory.
  • Paying tuition fees to that institution at the time of application and for the full duration of your exchange.

Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development – Phase 2 (SEED-2)

$10,000+ depending on duration

The Scholarship and Educational Exchanges for Development – Phase 2 (SEED-2) program aims to reduce poverty in the developing countries of ASEAN, Pacific Island Countries, and Mongolia and to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. SEED contributes to strengthening people-to-people ties between Canada and the Indo-Pacific region.

Eligible applicants must be:

  • A citizen of:
    • ASEAN member states: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos (Lao People’s Democratic Republic [Lao PDR]), Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, or Vietnam;
    • Pacific Island Countries: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu;
    • Mongolia.
  • A student enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country
  • Paying tuition fees to that institution at the time of application and for the full duration of your exchange.

You are not eligible for this scholarship if:

  • You hold or have a pending application for Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
  • You are already participating in a scholarship program funded by the Government of Canada.
  • You are already enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.
  • You have previously received a scholarship under the first phase of the program: the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED)

  • Explains the nature of studies or research to be undertaken.
  • Provides rationale for study in Canada and for the choice of institution, program and supervisor and how the proposed program of study or research will relate to their future career.
  • Explains how undertaking study or research in Canada will empower the student to apply their learning to address the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • Explains how they intend to use their learning to help combat poverty and narrow the development gap in their region in their future career.
  • Identifies the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) their proposed study or research in Canada is aligned with and will contribute to.
  • Candidates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste or Vietnam must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help to reduce poverty in their home country.
  • Candidates from Brunei or Singapore must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help combat poverty in one of the other nine ASEAN countries.
  • Candidates from Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu or Vanuatu must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help to reduce poverty in their home country
  • Candidates from the Cook Islands must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help to reduce poverty in one of the other thirteen eligible Pacific Island Countries
  • Candidates from Mongolia must provide an explanation how their learning in Canada will help to reduce poverty in their home country

4. Letter of proof of full-time enrolment from your home institution – must be sent directly from your home institution to [email protected]

  • On official letterhead.
  • Dated within the last six months.
  • Confirms that the candidate is currently enrolled in a full-time program (letters that do not confirm full-time student status will be deemed incomplete and not eligible).
  • Copies of transcripts, a student card or a letter of admission are not acceptable.

5. Letter of support from your home institution (maximum one page) – must be sent directly from your home institution to [email protected]

  • On official letterhead.
  • Dated within the last six months.
  • From the candidate’s instructor, professor or international director.
  • Explains the nature of study or research to be undertaken in Canada and how the candidate and the home institution will benefit from this scholarship program.
  • Assesses the candidate’s commitment and capacity to use the program of study or research in Canada to help combat poverty and narrow the development gap in their country or region.

6. Letter of invitation from the Canadian supervisor (graduate students only, maximum one page) – must be sent directly from the Canadian supervisor to [email protected]

  • On official letterhead.
  • Dated within the last six months.
  • Signed by the Canadian supervisor.
  • Describes the nature and scope of the research collaboration with the student’s home institution.
  • Confirms their willingness to support and mentor the candidate during the exchange period.
  • Explains how the Canadian institution, supervisor and peers will benefit from the exchange.

IN ADDITION, WE WILL SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:

7. Signed copy of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or Agreement with the partner institution

  • Indicates that tuition fees will not be charged and highlights this specific clause.
  • College and undergraduate research applications with no existing agreement can include a letter from the international office or equivalent on official letterhead that links the application to a specific international research collaboration, names the Canadian supervisor and confirms that tuition will not be charged. The letter must be dated within the last six months and be a maximum of one page.
  • Expired agreements will not be accepted – if the agreement is in the process of renewal, institutions must include a letter to this effect.
  • For graduate applications, an agreement is recommended but not required.

Funding for Brock Students Going Abroad

Brock International offers a variety of International Mobility Awards for undergraduate students participating in international learning programs such as exchanges or international field courses.

International Mobility Bursary

Varies based on credit count, length of exchange and/or financial need and funding available

Undergraduate students who will be participating in international learning programs, in an international student exchange or an approved international field course, may be eligible to receive funding by demonstrating financial need. Information regarding eligibility requirements and the application procedures can be found on the Student Accounts & Financial Aid website
