Funding for International Students from Outside of Canada
The following funding opportunities are available for international students currently enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution outside of Canada through an exchange, study abroad or research program. These opportunities are geared towards short-term exchange or research visit and do not typically apply to degree-seeking international students. Please review the application requirements in full at the links provided.
Study in Canada Scholarships
$10,000+ per term
Study in Canada Scholarships aim to increase opportunities for Canadian post-secondary institutions to welcome international students from a wide range of countries and territories on short-term exchanges for study or research.
Eligible applicants must be:
- A citizen of an eligible country/territory:
- Asia: Bangladesh, Nepal, Taiwan
- Europe: Türkiye, Ukraine
- Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia
- Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda
- A student enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country/territory.
- Paying tuition fees to that institution at the time of application and for the full duration of your exchange.
You are not eligible for this scholarship if:
- You hold or have a pending application for Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
- You are already participating in a scholarship program funded by the Government of Canada.
- You are already enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.
Institutions must ensure documents are complete and accurate as per the instructions below.
Please note:
- Revised documents will not be accepted after the deadline.
- Documents in a language other than English or French must be accompanied by a translation.
YOU NEED TO PROVIDE US WITH:
1. Proof of citizenship
- A copy of the candidate’s passport or national identity card with a photo and valid dates.
- Documents not accepted as proof of citizenship are: driver’s license, permanent residence card, work permit, student card, health card, birth certificate or baptismal certificate.
- Proof of citizenship selected must be from the same country/territory as the citizenship selected in the online application form.
- Students from Taiwan must also provide a proof of household registration in Taiwan.
2. Signed Privacy Notice Statement
- A copy of the Privacy Notice Statement for non-Canadian participants signed by the candidate and dated within the last six months.
3. Letter of intent from you (maximum one page)
- Explains the nature of studies or research to be undertaken.
- Provides rationale for study in Canada and for the choice of institution, program and supervisor and how the proposed program of study or research will relate to their future career.
4. Letter of proof of full-time enrolment from your home institution
- On official letterhead.
- Dated within the last six months.
- Confirms that the candidate is currently enrolled in a full-time program.
- Copies of transcripts, a student card or a letter of admission are not acceptable.
5. Letter of support from your home institution (maximum one page)
- On official letterhead.
- Dated within the last six months.
- From the candidate’s instructor, professor or international director.
- Explains the nature of study or research to be undertaken in Canada and how the candidate and the home institution will benefit from this scholarship program.
6. Letter of invitation from the Canadian supervisor (graduate students only, maximum one page)
- On official letterhead
- Dated within the last six months.
- Signed by the Canadian supervisor.
- Describes the nature and scope of the research collaboration with the student’s home institution.
- Confirms their willingness to support and mentor the candidate during the exchange period.
- Explains how the Canadian institution, supervisor and peers will benefit from the exchange.
IN ADDITION, WE WILL SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:
7. Signed copy of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or Agreement with the partner institution
- Indicates that tuition fees will not be charged and highlights this specific clause.
- College and undergraduate research applications with no existing agreement can include a letter from the international office or equivalent on official letterhead that links the application to a specific international research collaboration, names the Canadian supervisor and confirms that tuition will not be charged. The letter must be dated within the last six months and be a maximum of one page.
- Expired agreements will not be accepted – if the agreement is in the process of renewal, institutions must include a letter to this effect.
- For graduate applications, an agreement is recommended but not required.

Student Exchange Program – if Brock and the host institution have an existing exchange agreement. You must be nominated by your home university by the existing process. Check with your home institution for more information.

Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP)
$8,000+ per term
The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program aims to support the development of human capital and the next generation of leaders in the Americas while strengthening the linkages between post-secondary institutions in Canada and the Americas.
Eligible applicants must be:
- A citizen of an eligible country/territory:
- Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos
- Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama
- North America: Mexico
- South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
- A student enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country/territory

Canada-Asean Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED)
$10,000+ depending on duration
The Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) program aims to reduce poverty in the developing countries of ASEAN and to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. SEED contributes to strengthening people-to-people ties between Canada and the Indo-Pacific region.
Eligible applicants must be:
- A citizen of an ASEAN member state:
- Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos (Lao People’s Democratic Republic [Lao PDR]), Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, or Vietnam
- A student enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an ASEAN member state.
- Paying tuition fees to that institution at the time of application and for the full duration of your exchange.
You are not eligible for this scholarship if:
- You hold or have a pending application for Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
- You are already participating in a scholarship program funded by the Government of Canada.
- You are already enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.
- You have previously received a scholarship under the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development Program
Institutions must ensure documents are complete and accurate as per the instructions below.

- Identifies the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) their proposed study or research in Canada is aligned with and will contribute to.
- Candidates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help to combat poverty in their home country.
- Candidates from Brunei or Singapore must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help combat poverty in one of the other eight ASEAN countries.
4. Letter of proof of full-time enrolment from your home institution
- On official letterhead.
- Dated within the last six months.
- Confirms that the candidate is currently enrolled in a full-time program.
- Copies of transcripts, a student card or a letter of admission are not acceptable.

- Assesses the candidate’s commitment and capacity to use the program of study or research in Canada to help combat poverty and narrow the development gap in the ASEAN region.
6. Letter of invitation from the Canadian supervisor (graduate students only, maximum one page)

- Dated within the last six months.
- Signed by the Canadian supervisor.
- Describes the nature and scope of the research collaboration with the student’s home institution.

Funding for Brock Students Going Abroad
Brock International offers a variety of International Mobility Awards for undergraduate students participating in international learning programs such as exchanges or international field courses.
International Mobility Award
$175–$1,000
This award is available to undergraduate students participating in an exchange or approved international field course. Participants are eligible to receive this funding regardless of demonstrating financial need. All students participating in the Student Exchange Program are automatically enrolled. The award amount varies based on credit count and/or length of exchange period.
How to Apply
Brock students participating in the Student Exchange Program are automatically enrolled. Attending the pre-departure training is mandatory in order to receive this award and go on exchange.
Instructors of international field courses must send the list of students participating in the course to Brock International at exchanges@brocku.ca in order for the award to be processed. The course must be designated as an international field course in the relevant academic department or Faculty.
Instructors must also ensure that students in the international field course receive the pre-departure services offered by Brock International prior to travel. Pre-departure training can be arranged through exchanges@brocku.ca and must be completed at least 1-month prior to the departure date.
International Mobility Bursary
Varies based on credit count, length of exchange and/or financial need and funding available
The International Mobility Bursary is available to undergraduate students participating in an international learning program, exchange or an approved international field course who demonstrate financial need. Apply through OneApp.
Students already receiving internal funding to participate in study abroad and/or student exchange at Brock University (e.g., from Faculty or Department) are only eligible to receive this funding if they can demonstrate financial need.
