Extended stay in residence

What if I need to stay longer?

Any student wishing to be considered for an exception to the conditions outlined in the Residence Agreement must submit an extended stay request explaining their circumstances by the deadlines listed below:

  • Fall term: By 11:59 p.m. on December 3.
  • Winter term: by 11:59 p.m. on April 8.

A request for an extended stay is available online your Housing Hub starting Nov. 3 and March 2. Please go into your Housing Hub to apply for an extension. Documentation is required to support requests for extended stays beyond noon on the day after a student’s last exam, and a per diem charge for each night beyond the original departure date will be assessed.

Who is allowed to stay?

A student may be granted permission for an extended stay beyond noon on the day following their last exam only under extraordinary circumstances. Some examples of requests that may be considered are below. Please note that conditions may apply.

  • Academic requirements that are not listed in the exam timetable, such as take-home exams/assignments. Requests must have supporting documentation uploaded from your professor confirming that you have an academic commitment that requires you to stay beyond your scheduled time in residence.
  • International/Interprovincial travel with an accompanying ticket. Proof of travel must be uploaded with request (i.e. ticket confirmation) . Please note that extensions may not be given for multiple days regardless of flight schedules, so make your travel plans accordingly.
  • Bridging between on-campus housing contracts (Winter Term to Spring Term)– This is only available to students with a completed Spring Summer Housing application.  You will need to complete an extended stay request if you are scheduled to depart before April 23, 2026 at your contract end.  A charge of $21/night for each night beyond the residence closure on April 23, 2026 will be applied to your student account. Additionally, you will also need to submit an Early Arrival Request from April 23 to May 1, 2026.  To learn more about the early arrival request visit the Spring/Summer Housing website for students bridging their accommodation.
  • [Fall Term only] Varsity Sports Requirement . Requests must have supporting documentation from a coach confirming athletic commitments that require you to stay beyond your scheduled time in residence. When submitting online request, please select “Unscheduled/Take home exam.” Please note that extensions may not be given for practices or during End of Term in April.

Who would not be allowed to stay?

Here are some examples of requests we are unable to accommodate:

  • The person I am getting a ride with isn’t finished their exams until the last day;
  • The person picking me up can’t get that day off work;
  • I’m scheduled to work at my job until December 27;
  • I don’t get my house off-campus until May 1.

Please note that a student’s prior behaviour in residence will also be considered when evaluating extended stay requests.
