Core values

At the center of every initiative we embark on and every activity we hold are our 5 Core Values: Allyship, Community & Cultural Pride, Engagement, Growth, & Mentorship.

Allyship

The BSSC fosters an inclusive and welcoming environment that embraces diversity and celebrates all Black students’ unique lived experiences and perspectives. Recognizing that equitable inclusion is central to achieving inclusive excellence at Brock, the Centre values and supports the involvement of respectful allyship.

Community & Cultural Pride

The BSSC cultivates a keen sense of community and belonging amongst the Black student population at Brock. Holding space for students’ inter-cultural pride and unique lived experiences, forging and furthering connections with Black focused community organizations in the Niagara region, and creating opportunities for collaboration and celebration, the Centre champions and elevates Black culture, heritage, identity, and all-around Black achievement, excellence, and success.

Engagement

The BSSC seeks to engage Black students at Brock, supporting the navigation of their academic and personal experience while enrolled at the university.

Growth

The BSSC believes in unlocking the full potential of every Black student by providing access to resources, services, and diverse opportunities for personal growth and development. The Centre’s nurturing community network bring a wealth of empowering knowledge and insight that support Black students to achieve academic and leadership excellence.

Mentorship

The BSSC provides guidance, access to mentorship, and support from experienced Black students, faculty, staff, and a growing alumni network. Mentoring has a cascading impact, motivating students to become mentors themselves. Overall, the center’s mentorship prepares students for success and inspires them to make a difference.
