Week of wellness events set to help students thrive

With the busy Winter Term in full swing, Brock students are being encouraged to focus on self-care and their mental health during Thrive Week.

Taking place from Monday, Jan. 20 to Friday, Jan. 24, the celebration of well-being and connection includes events organized by the Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (SWAC) and Student Life and Success with support from partners from across campus and the local community.

A highlight of the week is a Student Success and Wellness Fair taking place Wednesday, Jan. 22 from noon to 3 p.m. in Market Hall. The fair, supported in part by a grant from the McCall MacBain Foundation, will feature free pizza and a variety of resources, activities and supports designed to help students thrive at Brock.

The packed schedule of Thrive Week events includes:

  • Drop-in Sleep Dreams in the HUB, located in TH 134, from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20.
  • Gratitude Boards with Wellness Navigators in the Computer Commons from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20 and from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Jan. 21 as well as at Thistle chalkboard from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23.
  • Drop-in peer-to-peer support hours with Peer Health Educator in the Wellness HUB, located in TH 134, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday (regular hours) as well as 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22.
  • The inaugural Mental Health Art Gallery, featuring student artwork, in Market Hall from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
  • A Varsity Athlete Puppy Room in the Kenmore Lounge 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
  • A Community Cook Along, one of Brock’s student food security initiatives  at the International Centre from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
  • The Student Success and Wellness Fair in Market Hall from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
  • A special session of Koffee with Katie, hosted by the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA), for grad students in MCC 300 from 1 to 2 p.m. (drop in) on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
  • Free, confidential STI testing at the Wellness Hub in the TH  134 hallway from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
  • A Housing Expo, presented by the Brock University Students’ Union and Off-Campus Living, at Isaac’s from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
  • Spider Plants and Mindfulness workshop, co-hosted by the GSA and SWAC, for grad students at the GSA student lounge in MCC 300 from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23.
  • The Brock Cares: Volunteer Fair, featuring organizations from the local community, in Market Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23.
  • Mindfulness in the HUB from noon to 4:30 p.m. (drop in) on Thursday, Jan. 23.  No mindfulness practice experience is required.
  • Paint me Peaceful in the Wellness HUB from 1 to 3 p.m. (drop in) on Friday, Jan. 24. No art experience required.

Thrive Week is celebrated across Canada with the goal of promoting student mental health and well-being.

Students can visit the SWAC website to learn more about mental health and counselling services, urgent and non-urgent health care and accessibility supports.
