Social Justice Research Institute Call for Affiliates

The Faculty Steering Committee (FSC) of the Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI) invites applications for affiliation from social justice-­oriented tenured and tenure-­track Brock faculty members and professional librarians.

Interested individuals may apply for SJRI affiliation by submitting the following information to SJRI’s administrative coordinator, Maria Callaghan (mcallaghan@brocku.ca) by April 20th:

  • •A current cv;
  • A one-­to-­two page statement of intent outlining the relevance of their research to social justice and their planned involvement in SJRI.

Social Justice Research Institute: Call for Faculty Steering Committee (FSC) Members

We are seeking to elect two new members to the Faculty Steering Committee of SJRI, each for two-­year terms to commence July 1, 2015 (shorter terms can be negotiated in the event of pending sabbaticals, etc.).

The Faculty Steering Committee (FSC) of the Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI) is the governing body responsible for the overall direction, financial oversight, and long-­term viability of SJRI. Membership on the FSC is a significant but highly rewarding service commitment. It involves preparing for and attending about one meeting per month plus committee responsibilities and project involvement (see below).

Opportunity to organize SJRI graduate student symposium

Preamble

The Faculty Steering Committee of the SJRI invites Notices of Interest from affiliated SJRI members in mounting a funded graduate student symposium in Spring 2016 around an intellectually significant thematic/problematic, which is transdisciplinary in nature, relevant to social justice, and likely to be attractive to Masters and PhD students.

SJRI offers: a core budget of up to $3,000 (+ $2,000 for limited student travel support); financial administration of the project; logistical support; knowledge mobilization know‑how and infrastructure; and assistance with supplementary grant‑writing if needed.

The Centre for Community Partnerships invites proposals for research papers to be presented at the 2015 Faculty Institute on Community-Engaged Learning at the University of Toronto, May 13, 2015.

We welcome twenty minute papers on any aspect of community-engaged teaching and learning, which may include research on community-engaged courses (qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods or other) or theoretical or conceptual papers related to the field of service-learning or community-engaged learning. Papers that speak to the Institute’s theme of “Aligning Intention and Action in Community-Engaged Learning” are particularly encouraged.

Call For Proposals

What is it to be human? Can we be anything else? Something more or less? Are we still,
or have we ever been, ‘human’ at all?

These questions only provoke more questions. How do we approach a topic so
fundamental to our own existence? Is this the concern of the humanities, social sciences,
physical sciences, theology, or the creative arts? Are we to understand the notion of being
human as a social construct, political subject, cultural development, or religious modality?
Or is it simply something to be experienced and not explained?
