Call for SJRI Faculty Steering Committee (FSC) Members

Social Justice Research Institute: Call for Faculty Steering Committee (FSC) Members

We are seeking to elect two new members to the Faculty Steering Committee of SJRI, each for two-year terms to commence July 1, 2015 (shorter terms can be negotiated in the event of pending sabbaticals, etc.).

The Faculty Steering Committee (FSC) of the Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI) is the governing body responsible for the overall direction, financial oversight, and long-term viability of SJRI. Membership on the FSC is a significant but highly rewarding service commitment. It involves preparing for and attending about one meeting per month plus committee responsibilities and project involvement (see below).

Interested individuals may indicate their willingness to serve on SJRI’s Faculty Steering Committee by submitting the following information to SJRI’s administrative coordinator, Maria Callaghan (mcallaghan@brocku.ca) by April 20th:

  • •A current cv;
  • A one paragraph statement outlining their interest in serving on the FSC, and their capability to do so effectively.

The existing SJRI FSC will review nominations and bring forward appropriate candidates for election at the SJRI Annual General Meeting in early May. In putting forward candidates, the FSC will aim to have members from two or more faculties in the university as part of its total complement. It will put forward candidates who clearly support the mission and aims of SJRI, who have the necessary time and skills, and who have capacities to support its long-term viability.

We urge SJRI affiliates to encourage good candidates to consider this service opportunity.

Responsibilities of the FSC:

  • advance the vision, goals and objectives of SJRI;
  • plan and help coordinate the execution of initiatives that will strengthen the SJRI organizationally, advance SJRI’s knowledge production and mobilization agenda, and help to secure the long-term sustainability of SJRI;
  • ensure sound financial management of SJRI and align budget priorities with planning and programming priorities;
  • develop protocols for adjudicating funding competitions and fellowships, the disbursement of funds, and financial reporting;
  • amend SJRI governance practices as necessary;
  • provide guidance and feedback to the Director.

Responsibilities of individual FSC members:

  • provide input to the agenda, prepare for, attend, and participate in SJRI FSC meetings (generally one per month);
  • chair (or sit on) one or more standing committee (e.g., staff advisory, grants adjudication) or ad hoc committee (e.g., hiring, symposium planning), and have significant involvement in the organization or execution of one or more SJRI initiative;
  • endeavor to attend some of the events organized or co-sponsored by SJRI.

If you require more information, please contact Acting SJRI Director, David Butz (dbutz@brocku.ca; ext.3205).
