Trustees of the University of Chicago, 1910 - 1925

This table was constructed for our history of W. I. Thomas, in an attempt to identify who was on the University of Chicago's board of trustees at the time of the original Culver gift and a the time of his firing. The source for this information was Thomas Wakefield Goodspeed's The Story of the University of Chicago, 1890-1925, written by one of the members of that board. At the time of Thomas's dismissal the following people were serving as trustees: Eli Felsenthal, Martin Ryerson, Charles Hutchinson, Andrew McLeish, Frederick A. Smith, Willard A. Smith, Jessie Baldwin, Harold McCormick, Adolphus Bennett, Howard Grey, Francis Parker, J. Spencer Dickerson,  Thomas Donnelley, Charles Holden, Charles Hughes, Robert Scott, Julius Rosenwald,  Harold Swift, and Trevor Arnett. Of the 20 odd members of the board, only six may have known of Thomas's role in obtaining the Culver Gift:  Eli Felsenthal, Martin Ryerson, Charles Hutchinson, Andrew McLeish, Frederick A. Smith, Willard A. Smith.

We constructed this table as a preliminary step in documenting ties between the Illinois Vigilance Association,  Vice Commission of the City of Chicago, Chicago's Committee of Fifteen and University of Chicago Trustees, the Rockefeller Foundation, the American Social Hygiene Association, and the federal Council of National Defense and its Advisory Commission, especially the War Training Camp Activities Commission and the General Medical Board and its committees on Hygiene and Sanitation and Civilian Cooperation

Please note, terms of service that end in a "D" indicate that the member died in service.
