Mature Student Admission Criteria

Mature Student Admission Criteria

Those who are not eligible for admission in any other admissions category, who have been out of school for at least two years and who are at least 21 years old, may be considered for admission as mature applicants. Mature student admission is only applicable to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Mature applicants selected for admission are normally limited to part-time study in a General Studies program. A minimum 60 percent overall average on the first 2.0 (full or equivalent) credits must be achieved before applying for full-time study and entry to a specific major. Otherwise students will be placed on academic probation and be required to pass all and to achieve a 60 percent average on the courses taken, while proceeding on a part-time basis.

Common Questions Related to Mature Student Status

I graduated from high school in 1989, but I never completed OAC grade 12 credits necessary for entry to an Ontario university. Can I apply as a mature student?

Yes. As long as you never attended post-secondary studies after leaving high school you are eligible to apply as a mature student.

My experience at my current university has not been a good one. I have been placed on academic suspension . Can I apply as a mature student?

Brock University honours suspension decisions at other institutions. You may only apply as a mature student if you have been out of formal schooling for a period of two years. Alternatively you may sit out the one-year suspension and then submit an OUAC 105D application with an accompanying letter outlining reasons for your poor performance at your previous institution. The Admissions Director will consider your application and make a discretionary decision regarding your eligibility. Admission is never guaranteed.

I graduated from college last year but my overall average is too low for admission to Brock. Can I apply as a mature student?

Not yet. A mature student is defined as an applicant who has been out of formal schooling for a minimum of two years, who is at least 21 years old.
