Significant Weather Events

At Brock, we want you to feel informed, prepared and supported throughout your time at the University. Periods of heavy rain can occasionally lead to localized flooding and other disruptions. The information below outlines steps you can take to stay safe and provides links to resources that may be helpful before, during and after significant weather events.

Before significant weather, heavy rain and potential flooding

Weather apps and local media outlets are excellent sources for information. Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority also shares flood warnings and status.

Prioritize your safety and follow instructions from local authorities. Do not enter areas where electrical, structural or other hazards may be present. If flooding has begun, do not attempt to access electrical panels or other electrical equipment that may be affected by water.

Basements may contain electrical panels, furnaces, appliances and other equipment. Do not enter a flooded basement if electrical hazards may be present. Never enter floodwater to reach an electrical panel.

If flooding may involve sewage, or you are unsure of the source, avoid flushing toilets or using sinks, washing machines, dishwashers or other fixtures that discharge to a drain, as this may increase flooding.

Floodwater contaminated with sewage can contain bacteria and other contaminants. Avoid unnecessary contact with the water.

Do not walk or drive through flooded areas or underpasses. Water may be deeper or moving faster than it appears and the ground underneath may be unstable.

Wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and clean water as soon as possible. Take care of any wounds and seek medical attention if necessary.

Leave the residence immediately and contact the appropriate gas utility or emergency service and property managers.

No. Never use generators, gasoline-powered pumps, heaters or other fuel-burning equipment inside a home, basement, garage or other enclosed or partially enclosed space during flooding. These devices can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Flooding can also create electrical hazards. Do not use electrical equipment that has been exposed to water or enter flooded areas where electrical equipment may be present.

If flooding occurs at a Brock-owned residence, contact the residence managers and Campus Safety Services immediately to report the flooding and request assistance.

After significant weather, heavy rain and potential flooding

Ask your landlord or property manager whether the residence was affected by flooding and what steps have been taken to address any damage. Use this information to be aware of potential health and safety hazards when returning. Do not enter or remain in an area if you believe it may be unsafe.

Flooding can create:

  • Electrical shock and fire hazards
  • Contaminated or sewage-affected water
  • Indoor air quality concerns, including mold, elevated moisture and other contaminants
  • Structural damage
  • Slips, trips, falls and hidden debris
  • Chemicals and other hazardous materials
  • Damaged heating or electrical equipment
  • Carbon monoxide hazards from fuel-burning equipment
  • Contaminated personal items including clothes, appliances or food

Discard food that has been contaminated by floodwater.

If you identify or are concerned about any of these health and safety hazards in your residence, contact your landlord or property manager and seek appropriate professional assistance where needed.
