Call for Video Art Submissions

The Visual Arts Gallery is excited to invite artists to submit video art for an upcoming exhibition that explores the broad theme of Through the Lens. We are looking for works that challenge boundaries, blend and explore genres, media, and materials, or juxtapose different perspectives – an opportunity to showcase innovative and thought-provoking video art.

Submission Guidelines

This call is open to all Brock University students, faculty, and staff.

Submissions should align with the theme Through the Lens – a broad scope and theme that invites video work of all kinds – explorations of literal or metaphorical intersections of society, culture, environment, technology, space, genres/media/materials, landscape, identity, and more. If applicable, student course projects and creations are encouraged – we’d love to see what you have been creating!

Video Specifications

Duration: Maximum duration is 10 minutes. There is no minimum duration; short-form video art under 1 minute is welcome.

File Format: MP4 or MOV format

Video file size should not exceed 2GB. If your file is larger, provide a streaming link (e.g., Vimeo or YouTube) with the download option enabled.

Resolution: Minimum of 1920×1080 pixels (Full HD)
Maximum of 3840 x 2160 pixels (UHD)

Aspect Ratio: Submissions can be in any aspect ratio, though 16:9 is preferred. If your video is in a different aspect ratio, please indicate so in your submission.

Sound: if sound/audio is integral to your piece, please provide clear instructions on any specific audio setup.

 Submission Process

• Submit your video file to visagallery@brocku.ca
  Name your video file as follows: [LastName_FirstName_TitleOfWork.mp4 (or .mov)]
• In a SINGLE WORD DOCUMENT, include artist name, title of work, media, date, and a short description of the work. Include a short artist statement and any additional details explaining the concept behind your work.

Selection Criteria

• Submissions will be juried.
• Artistic originality and creativity.
• Technical quality of the video.

Submission Deadline & Event Details

• All submissions must be received by October 20, 2024

Selected works will be exhibited in the Visual Arts Gallery from November 2 – 23, 2024.
An exhibition reception will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024 from 5-7 pm.

Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 1-5 pm *The Visual Arts Gallery is open to the public and free admission.

• Artists will be notified within one week of the submission deadline.

Rights and Permissions

By submitting work to this call and if selected to participate, you grant the Visual Arts Gallery the right to exhibit your work and use stills or short clips for promotional purposes (only). Artists retain all copyright of their work.
