    Ensemble Vivant have recorded for such labels as Fanfare, Pro Arte, Doremi, SPY and Opening Day/Universal and Opening Day Entertainment Group, and their recordings are heard on classical radio around the world.

    Ensemble Vivant, under the direction of Catherine Wilson, will present a concert with commentary on The Fugue, as well as give a masterclass on small ensemble playing for Brock music students.

    Ensemble Vivant consists of pianist, founder and artistic director, Catherine Wilson, as well as Sybil Shanahan (cello), Don Thompson (acoustic bass, vibraphone), Erica Beston (violin) and Norman Hathaway (violin, viola). Championing a unique genre-diverse repertoire in their concerts and recordings since the group first came on the scene in the late 1980s, Ensemble Vivant has received critical acclaim for its work in the classical piano-trio literature, as well as for its forays into the worlds of ragtime, jazz and tango.   • Viva Voce! Choral Series- Avanti Chamber Singers – Spring Suites

    springsuitesthumbThe Viva Voce Choral Series includes Brock’s student choral ensembles (men’s and women’s choruses) as well as the Avanti Chamber Singers, a mixed ensemble including several Brock staff and Music alumni. Under the direction of conductor Harris Loewen, the ensembles perform multiple concerts throughout the academic year, and engage in community outreach, collaborative work with other Ontario choirs and special recording projects.

  • Brock’s wind ensemble presents Dizzy Fingers

    The University’s wind ensemble and jazz band will perform a dizzying array of music when they perform next week.

    Called Dizzy Fingers: an evening of musical fireworks from Shostakovich to Hindemith, the evening of music explores the ensemble’s repertoire and includes a debut performance by the Brockbusters, Brock’s jazz band. Both ensembles perform under the baton of conductor Zoltan Kalman.

    Dizzy Fingers will feature masterworks of the past and present, including Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Paul Hindemith’s Wind Symphony in B-Flat, The Year of the Dragon by Philip Sparke and Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Concertino, among many others.

    The wind ensemble, part of the Department of Music, showcases the talents of 60 musicians from the Brock community, local high schools, and professional musicians from Niagara and Hamilton.

    Brock’s jazz ensemble, the Brockbusters, is an extra-curricular club made up of 20 members, forming a standard stage band setting. The mission of the Jazz Band is to provide a venue to jazz lovers in the community.

    The performance happens Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Centre for the Arts box office or the door.

  • Local choral groups release debut CD of Christmas music

    The Avanti Chamber Singers and Brock University Festival Chorus have released a new CD, entitled Voices of Niagara 3: Glorious Light, which features Christmas choral music written by local Niagara composers.

    This is first CD released featuring the 30-voice Avanti Singers and 60-voice Brock Chorus. Conductor and Brock associate professor of music Harris Loewen leads both ensembles, as well as other regional instrumentalists on the recording.

    The main work on the CD is the six-movement piece Gloria, composed by Peter Landey, associate professor of music at Brock, and sung in Latin by the combined groups. All of the works on this recording are unpublished and presented here for the first time.

    The music on Voices of Niagara 3: Glorious Light was recorded in multiple sessions at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake in May 2011 and May 2012, and at St. Thomas Anglican Church in St. Catharines in November 2011.

    The CD will be launched Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Avanti Chamber Singers concert happening at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, 31 Queenston St., St. Catharines.

    The CD will also be on sale at the Brock University Choirs’ performance of Cantemus that takes place Saturday, Nov. 24 at Knox Presbyterian Church, 53 Church St., St. Catharines.

    This is the third CD in the Voices of Niagara series. The previous two CDs by the Niagara Vocal Ensemble, also conducted by Loewen, are also still available.

  • Piano duo tickles ivories at Friday concert

    ENCORE! Professional Concert Series presents the Fung Chiu Duo at the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre on Friday.

    In this performance, Janelle Fung and Philip Chiu come together to present a concert that challenges the traditional boundaries of piano with four hands.

    Tickets are $28.50 for adults and $22.50 for seniors and students. Tickets are available for $5 for high schools students as part of the eyeGo program.

    Show starts at 7:30 p.m.
