Travelling to Canada

Brock University DLI # 019394569014

Before making any travel arrangements to Canada, ensure you have the proper documentation.

Verify the expiry dates of your travel and status documents, as expired documents may prevent you from returning home. Given the lengthy processing times for Canadian immigration documents, it’s advisable to apply early.

If you’re unsure which travel document you need, visit IRCC’s Find out if you need a visa to travel to Canada webpage. When applying from outside Canada for a study or work permit, you will automatically receive a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if required, without the need for a separate application.

What is the difference between a travel document and a status document?

Travel Document

Status Document

What is it?

A travel document is a document that allows you entry (or re-entry) into Canada.

A status document is what allows you to stay in Canada. Depending on the type of document and conditions on it, you may also be allowed to study and/or work while you are in Canada.

Can I let it expire?

While you do not need to maintain a valid travel document while you are inside Canada, we do recommend you have one in case you need to urgently travel.

It is extremely important that you maintain a valid status while in Canada. If you are leaving Canada and wish to return as a student, make sure your study permit will be valid until beyond your return date.
