Restoration

Brock University DLI # 019394569014

While you are inside Canada, it is important that you maintain your status. If you lose your status, you must immediately stop working until you have a new permit and are again eligible to study and/or work.

To maintain your status in Canada, you must:

If you have recently lost your status, you may be eligible for restoration.

To apply for restoration, you must:

Restoration is a complex application. We recommend all students who require restoration speak to an international student advisor before submitting their application.

Restoration FAQ

To restore your student status, you apply online in the same way you apply for a study permit extension. In addition to all the documents for an extension, you must:

  • Pay the restoration fee
  • Explain and provide any relevant supporting documentation on what led you to lose your status

For more information, see IRCC restoration.

No, you are exempt under 215 (1) if you are inside Canada and eligible for restoration. Visit the PAL page for more information.

Processing times vary, but decisions can take several months. Since you cannot study while waiting for a decision, it is important to connect with your Academic Advisor (undergraduates) or Graduate Program Coordinator (graduate students) for advice.

Note: Studying includes, but is not limited to, attending classes, taking exams, submitting assignments, etc.

If you are not eligible for restoration, there are limited options. We strongly recommend you hire a legal representative to understand what options you may have and to help you with your next application.

Note: Study permit applications made from outside Canada or made from inside Canada outside the 90-day restoration window require a provincial attestation letter. Due to the limited number of PALs that can be issued, it may not be possible to get one depending on the circumstances.

If your study permit expires while you are outside Canada, restoration does not apply to you. You would need to apply for a new study permit and wait for a decision on the application before returning to Canada. It may not be possible for you to return, so we do not recommend you leave Canada unless your study permit will be valid beyond your return date.

See initial study permit for details on how to apply, but note that as a returning student, you:

  • Must provide a letter of enrollment (not a letter of acceptance with your application)
  • Are not exempt from the provincial attestation letter. Depending on how many PALs Brock has available, you may or may not be eligible to receive one. You would need to request a PAL by emailing admissions@brocku.ca and providing details on your circumstances.

If you are inside Canada and not enrolled, please contact uhip@brocku.ca for information on what impact there may be on your health insurance coverage.
