What to Expect

To all survivors who may be grappling with the difficult decision of whether to disclose or report sexual violence, we want you to know that you are not alone, and we believe you. It is entirely normal to feel overwhelmed by fear, shame, and uncertainty about sharing your story. Everyone’s healing journey is unique, and there is no right or wrong way to navigate it.

Remember that you have the right to choose when, how, and if you decide to disclose or report your experience. Take your time, remember that healing is possible, your voice matters, and there are resources available to support you on your path to recovery.

HRE can assist you in understanding your options for reporting and disclosing an occurrence sexual violence. We want you to feel like you can make an informed and supported decision!

Brock Internal Sexual Violence Disclosure and Report Process

If you connect with one of our GSV Intake staff, you can expect:

  • Confidentiality and Respect: Your privacy is respected, and the process provides confidentiality. GSV Intake staff are empathetic and understanding and create a safer environment for disclosures.
  • Choice in Reporting: You have the right to choose whether to report the incident to the university, law enforcement, or neither. Reporting is not required to access support services.
  • Information: You will receive information about available support services and resources and about the options available for you to make a report internally, under Brock’s Sexual Assault and Harassment Policy, or externally, to the police.
  • Supportive Presence: Our GSV Intake staff act as support persons and advocate to provide guidance during the process.
  • Supportive Measures: Our office offers academic accommodations and other measures to support your well-being, such as extensions on assignments or exam accommodations.
  • Referrals to On-campus and Off-Campus Resources: You will be informed about on-campus programs and services and local community organizations that offer resources to support survivors of sexual and/or gender-based violence.
  • Ongoing Support: The process offers ongoing access to support and advocacy services to help you cope with the emotional impact and navigate any legal or administrative procedures if you choose to report.
