Gender-based violence refers to any form of violence that is directed at a person or a group based on their gender, often disproportionately affecting the transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming community as well as women and girls. It encompasses a wide range of harmful behaviors, including physical, sexual, psychological, or economic abuse, and may manifest in various settings such as domestic violence, sexual harassment, human trafficking, and harmful “traditional” practices.

Sexual violence specifically refers to acts of violence that are sexual in nature. Sexual violence is a spectrum of non-consensual sexual contact and behaviour which includes sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, sexual exploitation, indecent exposure, voyeurism, and coercion. It involves the use of force, manipulation, or intimidation to exert control over someone’s body and sexuality, often causing severe physical and psychological harm.

Both gender-based and sexual violence are critical human rights violations that require urgent attention and intervention to protect victims and promote gender equality and respect for all individuals.
