COMMUNITY ASSISTANT

We are currently hiring for the Community Assistant role. Applications will be open from March 27 to April 9, 2023 at 11:59pm. Qualified applicants can send their cover letter and resume to reslife@brocku.ca

Please note: Successful applicants must be full-time Brock students who have an academic average of 65 per cent or more in their top four credits at the end of the 2023 Winter term. If selected, you will be required to have Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification, More Feet on the Ground training, the University’s AODA training tutorial and any other mandated Brock University training prior to assuming RLS responsibilities.

What’s the best part about being a don? 

I have loved getting to build and cultivate a positive environment for my community. I have gotten to know all my students incredibly well and have helped them navigate through all the challenges that first year can bring!

What have you learned by being a don? 

I have learned that active listening and collaboration is incredibly important part of the role. My students taught me that we need to all work together in order to have a community that was well balanced for everyone’s interests and needs.

Why did you become a don? 

I became a don as I loved my time on residence in first year and wanted to be a role model and friend to my students. I wanted to be a major support system for them and help guide them through their first year at Brock.

Why should others apply to be a don?

Being a don allows you to develop great friendships with other staff members. It also allows you to create an amazing community and meet some wonderful students. It also helps you get more involved with everything that Brock has to offer in terms of campus resources and events!

What’s the best part about being a don?

The best part about being a don, particularly a Don of Activities is watching the students have fun and enjoy your events. Seeing others happy truly makes me feel as though my efforts were worth it and it is very satisfying.

What have you learned by being a don?

By becoming a don, I have learned the importance of time management and teamwork. No matter your position, you will have many things to complete, meetings to attend, and you will always be working on a team. I have refined these skills by being in this position.

Why did you become a don?

I became a don mostly because my don had set a great example for me and it really encouraged me to provide a positive experience for future students. I also became a don to enhance my social skills and build a community, which has been a success with the help of all my fellow RLS members

Why should others apply to be a don?

I believe that in first-year, it can be quite difficult to feel as though you are part of the university life and community. Thus, being a don can be very helpful in increasing a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and even experience. It is a very satisfying feeling to be a resource to others, and gain valuable experiences and transferrable skills that will stick with you for a lifetime.

What’s the best part about being a don? 

The best aspect of this position is learning how to take charge of a situation with confidence and composure. Being in command requires making decisions swiftly and adhering to them. This is what it involves to be a Don. The more you are compelled to do so, the more naturally it comes, which is an excellent expertise to develop both while a student and in a professional setting in the future.

What have you learned by being a don? 

Being a Don entails a great deal of accountability and investment of time. Being a Don teaches you how to balance and organize your tasks. This can help you in a variety of circumstances, including working in your chosen field or enrolling in graduate school for further education.

Why did you become a don? 

It is a fantastic addition to the résumé! Having this position on your resume shows the hiring manager that you have enhanced your existing abilities and learned new ones as a result of being exposed to a variety of scenarios and knowing how to handle them in a responsible manner. The one talent that all professionals look for when hiring a new employee is expertise in crisis intervention, and this is the ideal job that educates you and not only trains you but also exposes you to crisis intervention circumstances.

What’s the best part about being a don?

The best part about being a don is the connections we get to make with residents. As a Residence Area Don, I get to help build a community with residents and get to form connections with all of them.

What have you learned by being a don?

During my time as a don, I have learned the importance of teamwork and communication. Healthy communication and supporting others are really important parts of being a don.

Why did you become a don?

I became a don because I really admired my own don in my first year of residence and thought the opportunity to be a don was a great fit for me.

Why should others apply to be a don?

Others should apply to be a don because it is a great learning opportunity, you develop new skills, you have room to grow in the job, and you learn how to work on a team. Best of all, you form incredible connections with lots of residents and with fellow dons!
