The buzzing sounds of children learning — and laughing — filled the air when Arja Vainio-Mattila, Provost and Vice-President, Academic recently visited the Brock Learning Lab (BLL).
Housed in Brock’s Faculty of Education and deeply rooted in community, the BLL offers affordable math and literacy tutoring for kindergarten to Grade 12 students in Niagara.
Third-year Concurrent Teacher Education student Connor Middleton, a BLL tutor, spoke with Vainio-Mattila about the valuable skills he is developing including the opportunity to engage in one-on-one student interaction and lesson preparation as he works towards becoming a teacher.
The BLL is accepting applications for volunteer tutors and interns for its Spring Term math and literacy tutoring programs. Volunteers will have the opportunity to hone their skills at a BLL training session, learn to complete weekly learning plan outlines based on client assessments and gain experience over five weeks of tutoring a minimum of one hour per week.
Registration for families is also now open for the BLL spring session.
Tutoring sessions will be held both online and on site at the BLL on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Tuesday, May 6 to Thursday, June 5.
