Complement Your Concentration by Studying Abroad

Complement Your Concentration by Studying Abroad

There is a common misunderstanding that student exchanges are not possible for students specializing in a concentration. This is an unfortunate myth, as a student exchange can be a perfect way to complement your concentration. Studying abroad offers a further way to differentiate yourself through life experience and by taking unique courses not available in Canada.

It is valuable to have the experience of studying in a new culture and learning to approach your area of expertise from a new perspective. Each school has a slightly different teaching style that will give you a unique way to look at the study of your concentration. Being in a new country will help you see how the various areas of business are conducted differently around the world. For example, marketing and advertising can be very different in Asia from Canada. Information technology might be used in a new way in Italy or human resources may be approached differently in Peru.

Several of Brock’s partner schools are specifically recognized for being strong in certain area of study.

Entrepreneurship

If you are interested in starting your own business, a student exchange is an excellent way to develop your independence and confidence in handling things on your own. Many partner schools in France have business incubators and the courses designed from an entrepreneurial perspective, including Grenoble, EDHEC and Paris-Dauphine. This provides the unique opportunity to differentiate yourself by taking courses that cannot be found at Brock or even in Canada. KU Leuven and Solvay Brussels are Belgian schools recognized around the world for their strength in finance. While the courses are very challenging, adding this experience to your résumé could help catch the eye of future employers. An exchange also builds soft skills that will complement your technical knowledge.

General Management

Luiss Guido Carli is a beautiful campus located in the heart of Rome that provides an extensive range of management courses. This concentration leaves a lot of flexibility to take electives, making it easier to choose a unique destination that may not work for other students who are limited in their course selection.

Human Resource Management

A student exchange is an extremely valuable experience for anyone who is considering pursuing a career in human resources. Studying abroad is a great way to develop skills in cross-cultural communication that will prepare you for working with a diverse workforce in the future.

In the field of human resources, it is important to be able to look at a situation from various perspectives and to be understanding of other cultural norms. Spending a semester abroad shows that you are able to handle change and can work with others through times of change. Universidad del Pacifico in Peru offers a variety of HR courses including Cross Cultural Management, International Human Resource Management and Women & Development. Nottingham Trent in England has a specific program on Business Management & Human Resources.

Adaptability

Here at Brock, experience is important. It goes beyond having knowledge and technical skills.  Experience comes from stepping out of your comfort zone and realizing your potential.

Stepping into the unknown might seem daunting at first. It teaches you to adapt, to be prepared to take on change and adapt.

BSA President Aidian Gilhula studied in Norway for a semester.

Adaptability is one of the most critical skills for the world of business. With the increasing rate of technological change, it is important to be able to adapt with your surroundings. Jobs are constantly evolving and business continue to face new needs and challenges. Rather than being threatened by change, an adaptable person can benefit and capitalize on it.

Taking the opportunity to studying abroad is a great way for students to gain invaluable experiences, but also learn in situations where change is inevitable. It is the opportunity to remove yourself from the comfortable and familiar to experience an entirely new environment. It is the opportunity to reinvent yourself and leave behind the past expectations.

As recently returned exchange student William Maton stated,

“You have to look at it as a way to completely change yourself…starting the first day you land you can essentially become a brand new person”

Though intimidating, taking the leap can be so rewarding. You will walk out of the experience with a new confidence knowing that you faced change and thrived. After spending time in a foreign country on your own, you realize the strength you have as an independent and the opportunities traveling abroad has for you.

“Don’t be afraid the make the decision to go away, it will be one of the best experiences of your life. I learned so much while I was away in terms of being independent and solving any issues I had. I also was forced to go out of my comfort zone and I became a lot better at meeting new people and adjusting to new situations.”

How International Experience Results in Professional Growth

How International Experience Results in Professional Growth

A student exchange is more than just a fun semester of travel. It is more than taking photos by famous landmarks and relaxing on the beach in another part of the world. A student exchange is so much more than an extravagant break from learning.

An international exchange is an experience. It is an investment for the future, a time of discovery and personal growth. Living abroad allows you to find who you are as an individual and to make mistakes along the way. For a semester, you have the freedom to leave expectations behind and make a fresh start in a new country with people who do not have any preconceived idea of who you are and what you should be like.

“Travelling makes your mind grow. There is no better way to learn about yourself than through meeting other people and learning about other cultures. I feel as though I have grown more in 5 short months, than I have in my entire 24 years on the planet.”

  • Kajsa Cirocco reflecting on her Goodman Exchange

Living abroad does not simply teach new life skills but has the power to reshape you as a person. The experience teaches adaptability and broadens your perspectives as you live within a new cultural setting and take courses that are not offered at Brock University. Studying in a professional environment within an international setting allows you to create an impressive global network of like-minded business professionals.

“International exposure is critical for helping students to rise above the ambiguous and oftentimes compromising ethical choices that are inevitable when working across diverse cultures. Our programs emphasize broad-minded and disciplined thinking that enable to students to become effective ethical leaders in challenging situations.”

  • Professor Raymond Chiu, Ethics

You will return with a new confidence, knowing that you did not just survive abroad but thrived on your own. The new stories from your international experience create a great talking point in networking situations.

“It’s not just about preparing yourself to enter a global business environment, it’s about building character, working on personal development, and creating indelible memories you can later talk about with your network.”

  • Professor Antonia Mantonakis, Marketing

Having international experience is a differentiating feature that can set you apart in a stack of applications. It demonstrates a willingness to assume responsibility, take risks and adapt to new situations. An exchange requires planning, organization and time management skills. A semester abroad will bolster your resumé with relevant skills that cross into many different situations. Student exchanges provide a wide array of experiences and skills that be referenced in an interview setting. It provides a talking point that makes it easy to connect with interviewers, who generally love to share their own experiences abroad.

“I consider inter-cultural competence to be one of the most important skills for today’s business students. Any opportunity to travel and experience different cultures is a real asset. I would encourage all Goodman students to push themselves out of their comfort zones, travel internationally, and seek out new friendships with international students.  Previous Goodman students who have actively sought out these opportunities have always come back having changed for the better.”

  • Professor Mark Julien (OBHR)

If you are interested in taking this next step in your professional career development, contact the Goodman International Programs Office through the Goodman portal or by e-mail at business.exchange@brocku.ca. Additionally, you can meet in person by booking an appointment through the portal or by coming to Walk In hours from 2-4:00, Tuesday-Thursday in GSB 475R.
