Recreation and Leisure Studies

Recreation professionals deliver health, social, economic and environmental benefits through leisure services.

Each concentration teaches theoretical concepts and provides practical experiences through small group activities, experiential learning and placement/internship opportunities. Ties to professional associations and community organizations are established for students prior to graduation.

You may choose one of the following areas of concentration:

Community Recreation strives to ensure citizens have access to quality recreation programs and services. Students develop skills needed to run recreation programs, manage indoor and outdoor multi-purpose facilities, and implement recreation planning projects.

Outdoor Recreation focuses on leadership in the natural environment. Students prepare to serve as wilderness trip leaders, facilitate groups in outdoor recreation settings, work in outdoor and experiential education environments and promote social and environmental change in the world.

Therapeutic Recreation is dedicated to ensuring all individuals, regardless of ability, have access to meaningful leisure in their lives. Students gain hands-on experience in providing services to marginalized individuals (recent immigrants, people who experience poverty, older adults and people with physical and developmental disabilities and physical and mental health illnesses), using leisure to improve functional abilities and quality of life.
