Strengths, Experiences, and Needs of Black Autistic Post-secondary Students: A SEN-CAPS Study

PURPOSE

The purpose of the study is to learn about the strengths, experiences, and needs of Black Autistic Postsecondary students in Canada from their personal perspectives. We would like to hear from Black postsecondary students in Canada who identify as Autistic who are currently or have recently studied in College or University in Canada.

We note that people who identify with Autism or with disability in general may have different preferences for person first versus identity first language. We use these and other terms in our study materials and survey to represent the many different perspectives. If you decide to participate in the study, we will make every effort to use your preferred terms when we communicate with you and during the interview.

PLAN

The SEN-CAPS Studies are a series of research projects conducted by Dr. Rosemary Condillac, her graduate students, and community members focused on the Strengths, Experiences, and Needs of Canadian Autistic Post-secondary Students.

We are actively recruiting Students who identify as Black and on the Autism Spectrum who are currently or have recently studied in College or University in Canada to participate in a very brief survey followed by a virtual interview.  We are looking for 10-20 people to share their experiences with us.

OUTCOMES

The results of this project will provide important insights into the needs of Black students with Autism, gaps and barriers in the post-secondary environment, and suggestions on how to best support Black Autistic post-secondary students in their academic pursuits.

The outcomes of this research will be used (a) to amplify the voices of Black Autistic post-secondary students, (b) to contribute to the development of a disabled post-secondary student needs assessment (c) to create recommendations to improve post- secondary experiences, supports and services.
