Strengths, Experiences, and Needs of Disabled International Students Studying in Canada (SEN-DISC)

PURPOSE

The purpose of the project is to gather information from the perspective of Disabled International Students regarding their needs as post-secondary students in Canada. To achieve this, we will use a combination of survey and interview methods customized for different groups of students across the Phases of the study.

PLAN

Phase 1 – The Strengths, Experiences, and Needs of Disabled International Students who are Women from Global South Countries.

The first Phase will focus on International Post-secondary students who identify as women from the Global South with disabilities. This  phase is both an opportunity to pilot the methodology while focusing on the student investigator, Linh Thuy Dang’s,  specific interests. This phase is actively recruiting 10-12 participants.

OUTCOMES

The intersection of disability and international student status creates unique challenges that remain largely unexplored. We believe that it is essential to examine these students’ lived experiences to develop responsive and accessible supports within Canadian higher education institutions, foster cross-departmental collaboration between disability and international services, and ultimately advance the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion that strengthen Canada’s position as a globally inclusive education destination
