Four of our Centre members recently published a great article about biobanding in youth sport.
While, traditionally, sports participation is based on chronological age, this can result in athletes who are nearly a full year apart competing in the same age group. During pubertal years, grouping by age may provide physical advantages to those who mature early, and disadvantages to those who mature late. Such advantages could impact talent selection, psychosocial factors, skill development, competiveness, and injury risk. In this paper, our members discuss biobanding as an alternative to chronological age and how this can impact sport participation and be advantageous to all youth athletes.
