Week of employee events aims to support mental health

Faculty and staff will have opportunities to connect with colleagues across campus while improving their well-being during Brock University’s upcoming Mental Health Week.

Hosted by the Health Management and Wellness (HSW) team in collaboration with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Niagara Chapter, the weeklong series of events takes place Monday, May 4 to Friday, May 8 to coincide with CMHA National Mental Health Week.

This year’s theme, “Come Together, Brock,” highlights the important role social connections play supporting mental health.

Throughout the week, faculty and staff can enjoy activities designed to foster community, resiliency and relaxation. Proceeds of all Mental Health Week events will be donated to CMHA Niagara, supporting the organization’s local mental health resources and programs.

Those with experience crocheting, knitting or loom knitting can create granny squares for international student blankets from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 4 and Wednesday, May 6. Attendees are asked to bring their own supplies. Anyone who would like to make squares at home for the initiative can contact [email protected]

Pickleball players can join a doubles tournament taking place on campus from Monday, May 4 to Wednesday, May 6. Registration costs $25 per team of two

The popular annual Mental Health Week barbecue takes place Tuesday, May 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the DeCew Residence Dining Hall. Tickets for the event, which cost $20, include a meal and entry into a draw for a door prize valued at $150.

On Thursday, May 7, employees can join Manager of Grounds Services  John Dick to learn more about plants on campus that would make great garden additions. This event takes place outdoors from noon to 1 p.m.

Faculty and staff can also participate in Mental Health Week by sharing messages of encouragement and solidarity at the Thistle Chalk Wall from Monday, May 4 to Thursday, May, 7. Message stickers can be reserved online or obtained in person.

Employees can learn more about promoting mental health in the workplace during a Working Mind training session running on Thursday, May 21. Spots are limited and registration through ExperienceBU is required for those interested in participating.
