With the Canada Summer Games underway on Brock’s main campus and at venues throughout Niagara, the University will continue its involvement in a variety of ways.

In addition to being the Official University Partner of the Games, Brock will be the Presenting Sponsor at three key sporting events: rugby sevens, wrestling and beach volleyball.

Interim Brock University President Lynn Wells will present the gold medals in the wrestling team competition at Canada Games Park on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 9 p.m., while Vice-President, Research Tim Kenyon and Vice-President, Administration Ken Chan will be on hand to present the silver and bronze medals, respectively, for the rugby sevens competition at Alumni Field also at 9 p.m.

On Thursday, Aug. 11, Wells, Chan and Julie Stevens, Brock University Special Advisory to the President — Canada Games, will be at Canada Games Park to present medals for individual wrestling competitions during ceremonies at 3 p.m., 3:50 p.m. and 4:40 p.m. Kenyon will conclude Brock’s medal presentations on Saturday, Aug. 13, when he presents the silver medals for the beach volleyball competitions at Canada Games Park at 7:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, activities will continue to welcome community members to take part in a range of opportunities related to the Games on campus.

Each day, Brock tents located in Niagara Place (next to Canada Games Park beside the University’s main campus) will invite visitors to participate in a variety of activities that include using cutting-edge technology to test their throwing efficiency; meeting Brock’s women athletes and checking out their prestigious 2022 OUA Provincial Championship trophies; celebrating LGBTQI2S social and self-acceptance, achievements and pride; and testing their jumping skills with trainers from the Brock Sports Performance Centre.

Activities will also take place throughout the University and the region.

On Aug. 9 and 16, a student and research assistant from Brock’s History Department will set up in the Brock LINC to demonstrate the real-time digitization of historical documents to accurately chronicle the Games’ history.

On Wednesday, Aug. 10, Brock’s own Boomer the Badger will be at Alumni Field for the women’s Rugby bronze and gold medal matches. Visitors with tickets for the Games will be able to have their photo taken with Boomer and other Canada Games memorabilia.

The Lead Like a Girl program will use sport to help girls between the ages of 11 and 13 build confidence, develop leadership skills and find inspiration from Tuesday, Aug. 9 to Thursday, Aug. 11.

On Aug. 11, 12, 18 and 19, athletes will be asked to share their experience with Brock History students in the Rankin Family Pavilion at the Games as part of the University’s Sport Oral History Archive.

In Welland, on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 11, a project from Brock’s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts will see two Brock student-athletes — one a diver, the other a swimmer — deliver a circus performance at the Lincoln Street Docks inspired by the athletes’ physicality and embodiment.

On the same day, at the Canada Games Academic tent at Niagara Place, visitors can view art created by Niagara elementary and high school students to celebrate the Games as part of the PARTicipaction 2022 project, which is led by Associate Professor of Visual Arts Education Peter Vietgen, and was the result of workshops led by Brock students. The art is also on display at venues across the region.

Saturday, Aug. 13 will see the Coaching Association of Canada, Coaches Association of Ontario and the Centre for Sport Capacity at Brock University present a free workshop that invites local coaches to learn about self-care and mental health in the University’s Goodman Atrium. Also that day, the Brock tent will make a trip to the Welland Baseball Stadium, where anyone with an admission ticket can practise their throwing motion with a rubber chicken while learning about Canadian Girls Baseball and watching the Canada Games baseball semi-finals.

On Tuesday, Aug. 16, all are welcome at the Niagara Cricket Centre in Thorold to watch Brock cricket players compete in an India versus Pakistan friendly. The event will also feature local Indian and Pakistani cuisine, and the opportunity to learn how to hold a cricket bat.
