Innovative writing practices at centre of online discussion

The Brock community is invited to an online panel discussion focused on innovative writing practices and methodologies.

Held Thursday, Jan. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m., the virtual event is the second in a series of discussions hosted by the Joint PhD in Educational Studies to mark the program’s 20th anniversary. The overall theme of the series is Leading in Times of Change.

“Methodological innovation is important for generating new theoretical insights; thus, it is perhaps not surprising that contemporary researchers highlight unconventional methods and innovative writing practices as effective strategies,” said Rakha Zabin, doctoral student and a member of the organizing committee.

The evening will include a virtual panel discussion by faculty and doctoral students in the program, followed by small breakout group discussions.

The Program Committee hopes participants will leave the event feeling inspired and supported by sharing knowledge and building collegial networks between faculty, alumni and doctoral students.

“Historically, research methods and writing approaches have not reflected the reality of many people. By questioning and challenging the status quo, it may be possible to disrupt where needed, engage a more inclusive audience and support opportunities for success to all,” said Karen Julien, doctoral candidate, organizing committee member and Co-Chair of the Education Graduate Student Society.

The theme of the discussion series, Leading in Times of Change, was chosen to help participants respond to issues in changing times including social injustice and changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

To register for the panel discussions, visit the Joint PhD web page. The final discussion on March 25 will be “Keeping Research Relevant: Collaboration, Engagement, and Community.”

The Joint PhD in Educational Studies is a partnership between Brock University, Lakehead University and the University of Windsor.
