Opportunity to organize SJRI symposium
Call for Notice of Interest
Due: November 15, 2014
Preamble:
The Faculty Steering Committee of the SJRI, in collaboration with the editors of Studies in Social Justice, invites Notices of Interest from affiliated SJRI members in mounting a funded symposium in Fall 2015 around an intellectually-significant thematic/problematic, that is transdisciplinary in nature and relevant to social justice.
SJRI offers: a core budget of up to $25,000; financial administration of the project; logistical support; knowledge mobilization know-how and infrastructure; and assistance with supplementary grant-writing if needed.
Concept:
SJRI-sponsored thematic symposium involving about 15-20 active participants in a workshop-style event and featuring:
- one or more invited presenters with international stature;
- a mix of Brock and non-Brock participants;
- a peer-reviewed call for papers;
- texts produced and circulated in advance of symposium as a condition of participation;
- a public event open to Brock faculty, students and or other publics;
- a special issue of SSJ to be guest-edited by the organizers.
Target date: October 2015.
Application and Adjudication Process:
A two-stage process:
(1) one-page Notice of Interest due November 15;
(2) elaborated proposal from the leading applicant developed in consultation with SJRI FSC and staff, after which a final decision will be made about proceeding.
To apply, submit a one page Notice of Interest outlining the following:
- Describe the proposed thematic/problematic and its relevance to SJRI’s aims for a thematic symposium; (see SJRI Aims below)
- Describe how it might contribute to SJRI’s long-term sustainability in terms of ongoing research activity, larger projects, future grant applications, etc.
- List prospective participants in and beyond Brock;
- Identify a prospective invited participant of international stature;
- Identify a minimum 3-member organizing committee, including the lead organizer/applicant who must be an SJRI affiliate;
- Identify guest editors for SSJ special issue (may be the same as the organizing committee).
Adjudication:
NOIs will be adjudicated by a committee of the FSC with decision by November 30. A final assessment and decision about proceeding will be made by the SJRI FSC after elaboration of the original idea by the applicant in consultation with the SJRI FSC. SJRI reserves the right to seek other proposals or to develop its own.
Stage 2: Elaborated proposal (due: January 10)
An elaborated proposal including the following:
- Strong indication of interest from core invitees;
- Strong core Brock participants;
- Well-developed ‘call for papers’ and plan for its dissemination;
- Well-developed process for adjudication of proposals;
- Clear evidence of organizing capacity by applicants
- Preliminary articulation of the components/schedule of symposium;
- Draft budget
Proposed operating timeline:
Decision to proceed by mid-January 2015.
Call for papers circulated: Feb 15 (dates, venue and keynote confirmed)
Abstracts due: April 30
Abstracts accepted: June 1
Accepted papers submitted: Sept 1
Event: mid-October 2015
SJRI’s aims:
- To produce and disseminate world-class transdisciplinary social justice scholarship around a significant intellectual problematic relevant to SJRI;
- To cultivate Brock researchers in this endeavour;
- To initiate or advance the formation of sustained Brock-based and SJRI-affiliated research collaboration in the thematic area;
- To generate a special issue of SSJ.
