Youth Studio & Digital Art Lab

Creative Beginnings (ages 3-5)
Instructor: Wendy Bering
Bring your favourite adult to Rodman Hall and create together! This course is designed to give small children and a caregiver a chance to spend creative time together in an encouraging environment. Each session will explore new projects and media.

Like a Master (ages 6-9)

Do you love to paint and sculpt? Follow in the footsteps of the great modern masters by learning their techniques. In each class you will be introduced to a famous artist as you learn all about colour mixing, brushwork, blending and more!

Creative Clay (ages 6-9)

Join this fun, imaginative journey exploring three-dimensional form. Wear your messy clothes and craft your own clay characters and creatures while learning sculpting basics. Add splashes of colour with dashes of paint to some of your favourite pieces in the last class.

Turntablism Workshop (ages 9-13)

Wanna be a DJ? Working with two turntables and a mixer, you'll get a chance to try out DJ equipment while learning basic mixing, beat matching, scratching techniques and beat juggling.

Glass Tile Mosaic Bird Feeder (ages 10-14)
Instructor: Tina Howes
Celebrate the return of migratory birds this spring with a colourful glass inlayed bird feeder to hang outside!  You'll learn how to make a pattern, use mosaic cutters to cut glass into small tiles, and glue and grout your tiles onto a clay plate base.

March Break Art Camp

Creative Bliss Art Camp (ages 6-9)
Instructor: Wendy Bering
Have fun using clay, paint, tissue paper, pencils, markers, crayons and pastels to create your own masterpieces! Let your imagination run wild as you explore new ideas and develop new skills. Experimenting with a variety of media, you'll create a puppet, put on a show, paint a portrait, sculpt a monster, and much more!

Cartoon Capers (ages 10-14)

Great comic books are filled with cool graphics and figures in action poses.  You'll learn how to draw facial expressions and bodies in motion as you create an exciting storyline, make fake ads, puzzles, and more! At the end of the week, you'll take home a comic book made from your best work.

Moving Collages
Instructor: Laurie Boese
Explore the video collage of artist Adad Hannah in the exhibition Cuba Still (Remake), and let your imagination roam as you create your own collage in the art studio.

Printmaking

Bring your coat and boots and follow the signs local artist, Simon Frank, has designed for the grounds and gardens of Rodman Hall. Inside the art studio, enjoy a printmaking workshop.

Butterfly Wings and Leopard Stripes

You'll be inspired by the fantastical creations of Maria Fernanda Cardoso, who uses feathers to create the garments on view in the exhibition Fashion and Mimesis. In this mixed media workshop, you'll combine textures and patterns to create your own one of a kind project.

The Art of Jewellery Making: Enamelling and Metalsmithing
Instructor: Ruth Pallek
Enamelling is the art of fusing glass and metal. Practice in basic metalsmithing will lead up to explorations of several enamelling techniques. You'll finish with a beautiful piece of wearable art and a real appreciation of a challenging art form.

Still Life Acrylic Painting
Instructor: Melanie MacDonald
Interested in exploring the versatile medium of acrylic paint? Working from still life arrangements and photographs, you'll learn about the fundamentals of colour mixing, under-painting and glazing, and experiment with ways of applying and manipulating paint on canvas.

Card Making for Beginners and Beyond
Instructor: Vivienne Kraus
If you are interested in scrapbooking, paper crafting or stamping, this workshop will give you the opportunity to develop your skills as you create a set of 8 all-occasion cards. A variety of techniques including dry embossing, heat embossing and water colouring will be explored.

Digital Darkroom
Instructor: Peter Ferguson
During the first half of this session, you'll learn about the need for post-processing of digital imagery. After lunch, your day will continue with a hands-on session in the computer lab using the computer to download, catalogue and manage your image collection. Editing images in Photoshop will also be introduced. Please bring a USB stick with some of your own images.

Photoshop as an Artistic Tool

The Art of Presentation

Impress your family and friends with engaging and beautiful slide shows and photos. Instructors

Wendy Bering is a professional artist and a graduate of the Illustration Program at Sheridan College. Wendy has been teaching art to students of all ages for several years.

Laurie Boese has won numerous awards for his artwork and has completed many commissions throughout his career. He has been developing and teaching dynamic art programs for all ages for twenty years, and recently self-published a book on drawing.

Peter Ferguson has been teaching digital photography since 1999 and is currently a contributing photographer for Algonquin Park and several Canadian nature magazines.

Gilgun Doran began her graphic design career designing trends and home products for major department stores across Canada. She currently works as a Graphic Designer for Brock University Career Services and the Brock University Students’ Union.

Melanie MacDonald is a painter living in downtown St. Catharines. She is an active member of the Niagara Artists' Company, the region's only artist-run centre. In 2000, she graduated from Brock University with a combined Honours BA in English and Visual Art. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions in the Niagara Region, Toronto, Northern Ontario, and Quebec. Examples of her work can be viewed at http://www.melaniemacdonald.ca/

Mori McCrae is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, where she majored in drawing and painting, and was awarded the Forsythe Scholarship in her final year of study. Her early training took place in Florence, Italy where she studied Renaissance art. As a professional artist, one area of significant interst to her is portrait painting. She has been commissioned to paint many portraits that are currently held in private and public collections, including the University of Toronto and Welland County General Hospital. She has explored mosaic and figurative drawing and painting on unusual surfaces. She is a partner and exhibits at the Jordan Art Gallery, a commercial venue focusing on contemporary artists from the Niagara Region.

Ruth Pallek is a silversmith and enamellist and has been teaching basic and advanced skills in metal working, including brass,copper and silver, for many years. Enjoying new students and helping them to learn effectivley is her passion. She also teaches enamelling and porcelain painting, a fine art, using a kiln for color fusing and specialized brushes.
