Dark Green Religion Meets the Posthuman: Post-Islamic EcoSpirituality under the Neoliberal Anthropocene
Applying a posthuman, postsecular lens, this talk investigates the rise of post-Islamic ecospirituality as a countervailing response to the neoliberal Anthropocene in Türkiye. It examines how dark green religious values, linking ancestral shamanic cosmologies with contemporary youth culture, challenge anthropocentric “regimes of truth” and foster an ethics of multispecies justice.
The study reveals that, while traditional religious conservatism is declining among young people, it is increasingly being replaced by a nature-centered worldview that positions itself “beyond Islam” while retaining powerful affective dispositions of wonder and humility. These affective states function as critical forms of counter-conduct, enabling individuals to navigate and resist environmental degradation. Ultimately, the talk frames these emerging subjectivities within postsecular, posthuman political ecologies.
